I joined Anchor Club as a follower. I attended my first club meeting with a friend and committed without hesitation. For years, I had been one of those people who would or wouldn’t do something based on the amount of friends I had participating in the same thing. By sophomore year, this began to change. By junior year, that part of me was almost nonexistent – and now, I find myself to be an entirely different person, not basing my own actions on others, and being confident in myself, encouraging new experiences of my own. Anchor is more than just a club to me; Anchor is an opportunity for students to “do more, care more, and be more” as the Anchor International motto states. Anchor is unlike any other club. Though the idea of traveling 800 miles from home without my friends as travel companions was a little nerve-wracking, when I arrived, my fears of loneliness quickly diminished. While in this foreign state, I easily became friends with complete strangers – something I had never thought possible for myself before. I also learned to push myself beyond my normal social limits and ultimately became more confident and self-reliant. I was even able to learn more about my new friend’s cultures and how they differed from my own. When I emerged from the Atlanta airport a few days later, I felt like an entirely different person. Through this short leadership program, I overcame many fears of mine and was shown that I could be more than I ever had been before. Without Anchor Club, I would have never discovered these abilities within myself.
Anchor Club has brought me to a place in life I had never imagined I would be. By encouraging me to become confident in all that I do, I have created my own unique life experiences. I have enjoyed every moment of my Anchor Club participation and hope that current and future members will experience the club to its full extent as I did. I also hope that my leadership has inspired other members to become their own person and follow their own paths to success. I look forward to the experiences the future has in store for me, thanks to my participation in
