This article is, in my opinion, an example of how personal narrative can sometime confuse the author’s purpose. In order to frame her arguments she discussed her experiences with her family, and specifically how she was born a twin to a stillborn sister. She explains her families lack of coping and how her family effected her life, but I failed to focus on the overarching idea that she wanted to get out because of how distracting the stories from her personal life are. Instead found myself thinking that her story was strangely personal without much justification for why it was this way. While the point of her article, the balance between truth and respect, was somewhat present overall, the sections of personal narrative that she decided to include muddled it. …show more content…
However when she did write on these topics in the essay, they were full of examples. Short quotes and excerpts form other author’s work were constantly thrown in as supporting details for her purpose, but the information came so fast that it was hard to focus on the point she was making. I found myself somewhat lost among literary and scholarly references. This scholarly style of writing was alongside the very personal narratives that the author weaves in and out of the paper, and the two don’t seem to mesh. Both of these are examples of somewhat polarized styles of writing. While there are occasions where an author can skillfully put together these two styles, that didn’t seem to be the case here. That being the case, she relies on her strengths as fiction writer and uses pathos as the main vehicle to persuade the reader, resorting to many of the common logical fallacies to make her points. In the first three paragraphs she characterizes Westerners as cluelessly deluded, believing that they are self-determining individuals, when she argues, they are actually products of the “Group Mind”. And yet, she offers no real proof, “begging the question” throughout her essay with broad generalizations of people’s behaviors and research experiments. Furthermore, she relies heavily on hyperbole to make her points, twice declaring that to maintain one’s unique perspective in the midst of a group is “the hardest thing in the world” (652,653) and she even resorts to it in her thesis statement “we (the human race) are now in possession of a great deal of hard knowledge about ourselves, but we do not use it to improve our institutions and therefore our lives”. (653)…

She makes many remarks towards information regarding the reason women are dying at a younger age, but doesn’t give a source as to where the information came from. One example of assertion was “Black women without a high-school diploma are now outliving their white counterparts.” (602). She then continues to give knowledge of reasons why black women are outliving white women, but fails to give a source for that knowledge. By not giving evidence, it makes it difficult for the reader to believe all that is in the essay.…
