It’s almost as if she was reading my mind. My cousins, brother, and I grew up roaming these wooded pastures and trails. Though, these familiar paths seem less visited. There are so many warm fun childhood memories kept between the wide-open cattle pastures and barns of east Henderson County, Texas. My brother, cousins, and I would load down with machetes and various other tools around our waists, as if we intended on to make ourselves useful. Although, usually we would head out spending our bright sunny days, being anything but useful. Today, my excited, bouncing, daughter and I set out with nothing more than walking sticks, a backpack with cool, chilled water, and a half-empty, rusted can of mosquito repellant. We explored places we once called The Big Tree (for the reason that it blocked part of our path), the Monkey Vine Swings (we used the vines to swing across the creek), and - intimidatingly, because we had once found a dead, decaying cow there – Dead Cow Corner. I share these memories with my cousins and brother, these memories helped to build a bond that I believe to be unbreakable. No matter what turmoil we have ever found ourselves in, we have always been able to lean on each other. Even as we have grown up, and moved away, our relationships have continued to be resilient. I know this is because of the relationships we build together, and the memories we share among these
