Growing up as a homeschooled pastor’s kid, it is not surprising that my social interactions were all but limited. From the ages of eight to sixteen, the longest we lived in one place while being employed at one job was approximately two years. As financial situations plagued the churches we were employed at, they were left with no other choice than to lay my dad off. As a child I longed for a sense of consistency when it came to friendships, as every time would begin to grown close to someone it seemed as if we were shortly after uprooted rom that position, and forced to move. This eventually led to me removing myself from all forms of attachment (outside of my family) because I feared that I would soon lose anyone or anything I became attached …show more content…
Because of my long history of inconsistent residence, my brother Josiah naturally became my best friend. Josiah, who at the time was seventeen, went to the public high school and worked part-time at Starbuck’s Coffee. During a closing shift on December 1st, and absolutely devastating ice-storm hit our city, and within a couple of hours the roads were completely iced over. Starbuck’s is notorious for their late closing times, which allowed for the roads to become extremely slick before he was able to head …show more content…
Due to God’s miraculous work, my brother woke up from the coma a few days later, but he had suffered severe brain damage. He was paralyzed on the left side of his body, and he remembered next to nothing of who he was. The doctors described it as his brain returning to a toddler-like state, where he would slowly mature as his condition improved. And his condition did consistently improve. Two weeks later he was transferred to another hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that was rated number one in the nation for their treatment of patients who have suffered traumatic brain damage. From time to time when we would visit him, I would notice many other patients there who their families said had been their for years.
Again, miraculously, and to the glory of no one but God alone, my brother’s condition improved until after approximately six months of rehab, he was entirely healed. The only thing that hadn't been fixed at that point was some slight nerve damage in his face, which cause him to smile in a way that he very much disliked, and commented often about how ridiculous he looked. My youngest sister often teased him by smiling back at him with her impression of what his face looked like when he did

I am the child of a refugee family that migrated to America fourteen years ago to escape threats of murder at the vicious hands of the Taliban. Boarding a plane and landing in an unknown city with unknown people was my new home. Upon my arrival in this big country with the large populated cities and bright lights left me gripping my father’s shirt tighter. Throughout my life I have always been exposed to alcohol, and the negative effects it has on people. Most of my father’s family had been addicted to alcohol, this includes all his brothers and his father. My mother always warns me not to even touch alcohol, because she believes that my siblings and I are likely to become addicted. I don’t argue simply for the fact that I have watched my father go through the struggles of being an alcoholic, and that is not something I would to experience myself. When I was in middle school, not sure what what year, it was the first time I saw my dad as someone else.…

I have heard the saying life is not fair a million times, but it never really affected me until recently. Most everything in my life has not always gone my way; from talents, to sports, to even luck, I just cannot seem to get what I want. Some people tend to have it better than others, because they have everything handed down to them. It is just the way life works. I am not saying I have it the worst, because I know I do not, but sometimes it is really frustrating to see people flourish at everything while I sit there and try, but yet do not succeed.…

I vividly remember walking through the woods on a cold October afternoon, listening for the animals in the woods. They always seemed to be my comfort. I would find myself trying to intimidate a beautiful melody I once heard from my grandma, and the animals would rustle along the fields beside me. Their footsteps on the crunchy grass somehow made me feel more comfortable. I would whistle the melody, and pretend I was on a huge Broadway stage with a standing ovation.…
