Ready, set, aim, and repeat is what constantly ran through my head when I got ready to pick up my bow freshman year. I knew what I wanted, and I was going to do everything I could to achieve it. The top female archer spot was going to be mine even with the few bumps in the road, I wasn’t giving up. Becoming top female archer in south state took a lot of dedication because I was the underdog, had limited practice time available, and injured my wrist. One of the first obstacles that I faced involved being the “underdog” of the competitors. Being only fifteen years old put me at the lower end of the female age group. The older girls, however; had more experience with competition which put them at an advantage. Never being eligible to compete

For as long as I can remember, as a child I was raised to believe that a man should be the king of his castle. When I was five years old, that statement became a fable to me. I felt the Judas kiss the day my dad left. His reign has ended as king of his castle. He relinquished his crown and abandoned his kingdom.…

If only I hadn’t had that accident I would not be where I am today. Every day I am thankful and grateful for the accident that I was involved in while in Iraq. I always said while joking but serious at the same time, that God if I was not in the military I will give myself to you completely in ministry. A few months while deployed to Iraq my vehicle was hit with an I.E.D. and the armor truck rolled down a hill on top of me and shattered my right knee and many other injuries. I believe God didn’t waste any time moving me into the direction of my purpose.…

One of the first times that I had ever spoken in front of a large audience, was when I was six. I was the angel in our Christmas Eve nativity service at church. When someone had asked me if I wanted to do it, I was pretty hesitant, but still decided to do it. I worked really hard to memorize the lines and get into character, but as soon as I got onto the stage, I froze. I was not physically able to move.…

I never thought I could feel so much happiness than when I knew I was impacting a child life for the better. I would rush home from school, change into my work uniform, and soak up as much sun as I possibly could knowing I wouldn’t see or feel its warmth for the rest of the day. My bleak attitude during depressing winter days completely revolved once I stepped into my classroom; every day thirteen chubby two-year old would run to me exclaiming how they missed me and how their scribbled drawings were just for me. Their parents saw my commitment and regularly told me stories about how their little one now knew the words “spectacular” and “illuminating” or they used the bathroom all by themselves singing the potty song I had made up the day before.…

“Different… very different.” These were my mother’s words when I held up my first artwork with a big smile full of baby teeth. That piece was a watercolor painting of an unrealistic ocean. There was a blue and orange striped shark as the main component, rainbow jellyfish crowded in the bottom corner, and air bubbles shaped like musical notes at the top. With her face aghast staring at my masterpiece, I comprehended that to her the concept of my illustration seemed peculiar and the craftsmanship mediocre.…

At the time I was a poor college student looking for a place to stay with my friends. We found an apartment for cheap. It’s September 18th, 2016, and my nana and I are both sitting on my bed in which the sheets were still removed from getting washed earlier that day. She has short hair as dark as chocolate, and brown, loving eyes with circular gold frames around them that watched me as I prepared my questions. She had her signature coral lipstick on that she always wore so well. It’s an overcast, yet mildly warm day with the kind of clouds that are a smokey gray with a dash of sunlight emerging from behind them. In the background, the sounds of my family along with Seahawks game coming from the living room was undeniable.…

I was in the middle of my 8th Grade year when my mother sat me down to talk about what was going on in Los Angles, California. That day I got off the bus like usual and was going to do my homework, but before I could do anything my mother stopped me with a very worried look on her face and I was immediately alarmed by what she is going to say to me. She then enunciated “ Your grandma is in the hospital and I need to see her as soon as I can.” I asked her what was wrong with her mother, she then explained to me that my grandmother had kidney stones and they were unable to do surgery because her body was too fragile and she would not make it.…
