Many people go through life thinking that intelligence is static. Many think that people are simply born with certain skills; they either have them, or they don’t. After all, the only way to be smart, is to be born with it, right? Or is there more to it than that? It only makes sense that the brain, being like any muscle in the human body, would work identically to say, a bicep; the more you condition it, the more it will thrive, and the more it will expand. This is something I see time and time again, that took years for me to understand, but now that I do, I have opened cognitive doors. (Am growth now, but wasn’t always that way)
I started out my academic career as a child to which just about everything came easily. Not only schoolwork, like

In “You Can Grow Your Intelligence,” research shows that the brain is very similar to muscles in the human body. To allow muscles to become larger and stronger, they need to be worked out. Brains are very comparable by when someone is learning something new, and when those things are practiced, certain parts of the brain get larger. The brain is working out when learning new things and the neurons multiply, and get stronger triggering someone to understand the topic. Growing intelligences can happen at any age, or even to animals.…

With all of the technological and medical advancements over simply a few decades, scientists have been able to discover so many mysteries of the brain and how it functions. Even with all of these advancements in mind, many remain convinced that one's intelligence is tied to their DNA. People remain convinced that genius and genes go hand-in-hand. In Shenk's (2011) book, he delves into some of the misconceptions people have when it comes to intellectual capabilities. Shenk challenges people to consider the idea that intelligence is obtained via a process, rather than by inheriting a “genius gene” from your parents.…

As a military child, I left the United States with my family at the age of five and spent eight years living overseas at duty stations in Japan, Germany, and Italy. We traveled extensively during vacations to over 20 different countries. As a result, I claim proficiency in ordering french fries and apple juice in several different languages. Although moving has brought me some misfortune, and many people would say that living overseas qualifies as adversity, I never felt it was such.…

Lisa Blackwell, Gad Saad, and Carol Dweck all argue, respectively, that intelligence is not fixed, that our attributes are affected by both our genes and by our experiences. Most people say a child can be born “smart” or “dumb”, but how is that when they are new to everything and they’re still learning. Therefore, there is no such thing as a fixed intelligence because we learn something new every day. We can grow our intelligence as longest we practice the strategies.…

Beginning junior year, I occupied myself with the most constructive investment in my life. My daily routine was bland, but oddly hailed as the ultimate path to victory. I was learning in school, but the learning lacked meaning. Plot lines and mathematical formulas were unavailing ideas, which I tepidly regurgitated. I concluded that a life permeated with monotonous toil was not worth celebrating on my day of judgment.…

Life started getting rough for me around the time that my dad was terminated (11/10/2016). Everything seems to be coming at me all at once. Asides from studying for finals, I was also focused on working two jobs because everything in the house became my responsibility. Mortgage became my responsibility, bills became mine, car loans became mine, expenses in the house became mine as well. I became the support system for my family, both emotionally and financially.…

The past two weeks I have worked at northshore maternity and national womens community midwives. During my week at northshore it was incredibly busy and understaffed. I also remember thinking at times, where has the midwifery gone? We were so busy rushing around trying to provide safe and quality care to the women, but that fact is I feel we were too busy, with too larger case loads to provide true midwifery care. I cared for many day 1-2 sections, women with large blood losses requiring blood transfusions, a secondary PP and there was a woman with confirmed H1N1 on the ward who was unstable – but HDU wouldn’t allow her to be transferred around, and many other complex situations that really challenged my competence, knowledge and practice reasoning.…

Over the duration of my senior summer I was allowed to experience many wonders as I transitioned out of one segment of my life to a new one; however, possibly to greatest experience out of the entire time period of my summer was my family's trip to six flags. We began planning for the trip months in advance saving money, gathering supplies, and making reservations. We toiled through this segment of planing making sure that all of the details of the trip would be perfect. Once all of our details were lined up ducks in a row and bags packed as if we were to stay for a month, we began travel on the an interstate that was as busy as an ant nest just before winter, as in when they begin to store food, but I digress we weaved through the traffic,…

As stated in the article, “new neuron networks are created and become permanent through effort and practice.” With every new piece of evidence, neurons in the brain form and make connections, actually causing intelligence. The challenge of using the appropriate mindset is often more difficult than the actual challenge that is being faced. Getting into the growth mindset, which is necessary when facing adversity, is harder for those who are used to having a fixed mindset about most things. Those with fixed mindsets are used to everything being the same.…

When the majority children think about their adolescent years they think about the joyful times, but I remember standing outside, with my Minnie Mouse suitcase, waiting for my father to pick me up like he promised, but he never showed. In general, I cannot remember much about him during the 10 year span of my adolescents that he was heavily drinking. My father and mother officially divorced when I eighteen months old and my mother was granted sole custody when she was twenty-two. From there things fell into a downward spiral, when I was three years old my father tried to drive while under the influence with me in the car which concluded in a restraining order which was dropped when I was four years old. My creative side is not expressed artistically such as drawings, paintings and sculptures, however, I can express myself through innovative thinking and problem solving. For instance, just recently, my parents planned a family trip during thanksgiving break to Cancun, Mexico. It was great news, but I wanted to share this amazing experience with someone I really cared about. Straight away it was a difficult thing to ask of my parents to invite my best friend, therefore I needed an immense approach to convince my parents. At the present time I was clueless on what I was going to plan out, but I knew I needed a confirmation ahead of time of whether I could or couldn't take her with me.…

When I was entering the school I wished that summer could have been longer. I did not miss my old school at all because it was boring and I just want to start over. Never have I been more overtaken by fear than when I was sandwiched between two four-foot tall fifth grade girls sporting clunky running shoes and skyscraper high ponytails framed by neon headbands. I sneakily glance at them while wiping my sweaty hands onto my bright blue t-shirt and sparkly leggings donning my school colors. Behind us, the high-pitch cheers from the spectators of the annual All Island Track Meet ring through my ears. Every year, fifth graders from the three elementary schools in our district flock to the local high school track vying for the revered title of best elementary school.…

I don’t remember it that well, but my parents divorced when I was around three years old. I vaguely remember my father getting on a plane at the airport to go back to Guam and my mom, brother, and I waving good-bye. I have heard stories about why they split, saying that it had nothing to do with my brother or I, just differences between the two. As I grew older, I would still get presents in the mail on my birthday, Christmas, and even Halloween. He would send mangos from Guam, pictures of him fishing and even working (as a firefighter).…
