The law states that an adolescent becomes an adult when they turn eighteen, but in reality anybody can become an adult at any time in their life. I experienced a life-altering event when I was six years old that has changed my life forever, and has made me mature quicker than most. Maturing and becoming an adult is an important moment in someone’s life because it shapes them into who they are and becomes a person’s identity. People may experience positive moments that have changed their lives for the better while others may experience negative events that have made them grow up earlier than expected. When I was six years old I lost my best friend, although it was a melancholy event, it has transformed my life for the better and has become a major part of who I am today. …show more content…
We spent every day together in preschool and made a lifetime of memories in just six short years. In June, Jamie was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor at the base of her brain stem at only five years old. The doctors could not operate because it was a risky surgery, they said she only had six months to live. Jamie moved to Long Island for that summer for the least invasive and best quality of life procedure her family could find. At the time I did not understand what was going on because I was young; all I knew was I could not see my best friend. Since, the steroid she was taking was strong we were limited to certain activities, luckily we found a common interest in arts and crafts. Although her appearance was different, it did not hinder the time we shared together. Jamie proved the doctors wrong and lived for thirteen months before passing away in September 2004. This was particularly hard for me because I always thought and prayed she would get better - since I was so young, I assumed someone or something would save
