After I graduated from nursing school I moved to Paradise, California and went to work at Enloe hospital for critical care training. Paradise is a retirement town and I met a lady named Bonnie. She lived close by, was 95 years old and had no family other than a brother that lived in Texas. I spoke with him several times on the phone and he himself was in his 80’s. I was really concerned for her well being and she wasn’t doing all that well on her own besides she was very lonely. I took her under my wing for several years and helped her with her shopping, errands and cooked her meals. She became a really great friend as time went by. She lived in a retirement trailer park which was really nice and neighbor’s looked out for each other …show more content…
Her cat went missing and she told me she wanted the old cat chair hauled off. I looked closer at the chair. It was covered with cat hair and really dirty but I could see that it had potential. So she said I could have it if I didn’t want to haul it off. I told her of my plan to recover it and she just laughed. I took it home and luckily took some pictures of it. I had never done any type of upholstery work so after calling around and getting prices to have it done by a professional, I decided I could figure it out myself. I went to an upholstery shop and got as much information from them as possible and all the supplies. The springs had sprung under the chair so the guy at the shop gave me a quick lesson on repairs. When I tore all the fabric off, I found it was actually stuffed with horse hair. I know that sometimes refinishing antiques can actually ruin the value but as the chair stood it was nothing but nasty and worthless. So once the horsehair was gone, I retied the springs, padded it, covered it with muslin and then reappusltered it with a nice tapestry material. The wood had years of grime on it so I refinished the oak and it turned out really beautiful with tight grain, not like …show more content…
I took some before pictures because it was such a mess and I’m glad I did. I had Bonnie over for dinner and showed her the chair as she was so happy to see how the chair turned out and loved sitting in. She couldn’t believe it was the same chair. I’ve have had it now for almost 26 years and have hauled it around with me over the years. Every time I look at or sit in that chair I think of Bonnie and what a sweet lady she was. The funny thing is I have a cat that loves to sleep on the chair. I guess it is destined to be a cat chair, although I have a blanket on it to protect it. Bonnie was a retired school teacher and was really sharp for her age. The chair is something that brings back memories of a great lady that I once knew and considered her a great friend. It has beautiful scroll work below the arms, the arms curve back slightly and I think it has beautiful lines. It is very comfortable to sit in and I found a little ottoman that matches quite well and covered it in the same fabric. It does have the old roller casters that are original for the legs and you can slip them out. I have hardwood floors so they are out right now. Anyway I love the chair and I

Since the entire piece is of alabaster I believed that the piece was too delicate for a person to used daily. Nevertheless, a noble could have used it to display their own grace and wealth. Another reason why the artist might have chosen alabaster instead of ordinary wood, aside from the noble or royal user’s status, lies in alabaster’s almost supernatural quality to absorb light. This is beauty in itself; beauty held by the user whenever they held this tool. The alabaster raises the user’s pleasure and would have given them a sort of boost in confidence.…

Old dusty clothes draped over the old faded grey rickety chair, resting in the corner. The pitch black wallpaper ridiculed with silver spider webs obscuring the majority of the walls, with the windowed wall disintegrated from the events of the world. The single bed relaxes alone in the corner of this confined space. The small abandoned bed, with its childish bright blue duvet, faded from time, neatly made mocking itself and the rest of the room with its emptiness. The dark wooden bookcase, filled with torn, old half eaten storybooks, half rotting away infested with dark radiation enlarged bugs.…

In many ways, individuals often struggle against their fears. The time I experienced this was when I used to ride steers a couple summers ago. It was a hot July day and my dad and I had just finished helping my Rodeo queen sister get ready for carrying flags to start off the rodeo. After when we walked over to the stands to get ready for their riding, I was gearing up to ride one of those beasts they call steers, thinking I was going to get killed.…

Technology has developed so much over the years that we have relied on it so much. Technology is used in pretty much everything we use nowadays. Living in a neighborhood was the greatest advantage, but having kids the same age as I was even better. There was never a time we weren't outside: rain, shine, snow, miserably cold, or even scorchingly hot. There was 4 of us: 3 girls and 1 guy, all around the same age.…

“Mia can you go walk A field and the corral?” my supervisor asked over the walkie-talkie as I finished bringing in fifteen excited dogs from group play. By this point I had already walked more than a dozen dogs, fed half the kennel, and taken out over a hundred dogs for one of their daily outings. I was exhausted and now I had to pick up a field full of dog feces.…

I was startled and immediately exited my room as did my brother and together we rushed down the stairs into the kitchen. My grandmother had collapsed. She had busted her nose and hit her head on the cabinets behind her rendering herself unconscious.…

I have been through so many experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. However, there is one experience in particular that moved me in ways I can hardly put into words. My freshman year of high school, I was given the opportunity to join the Klondike FFA Milk Quality Career Development Event team. Studying and competing in this event led me to develop a fighting hunger for winning. Halfway through my first year, I realized that I did not like to lose.…

The trips were unplanned, as I have traveled to 13 different countries in four continents of the world. At least that was something to brag about after returning home from six years of military service. I would talk about these moments in a heartbeat when topics related to travel surface in conversations. Remembering and reliving those moments brings great fulfillment. Usually, there's a moment in life where I experience home in places I've visited.…

There was not a single piece of leather furniture that lacked an intricate map I had scratched into it with my grubby four-year-old fingernails. Every wall and flat surface had Sharpie murals of vast cotton candy skies and family trees made of dogs as soon as I discovered how to hold a pen. My parents never tried to stifle my creativity. They urged me to pursue artistry and offered every tool conceivable to develop my creative skills. Growing up hearing my father jam out on guitar and watching my mother lose herself painting silk (among the many other hobbies they both tend to), my inspiration never ran dry.…

The first time I had a phone I was in elementary school, and had it for about 2 years. Then as life moved on, and events took place, I was not allowed to have one, and did not have one for almost two years. When I was in fourth or fifth grade I was allowed to have another one and kept it until the sixth grade. My dog had torn it apart, and because of financial reasons, there was only one phone in the house, between three people, and it was a old slide up phone. Not a touch screen…

I still have nightmares about the week when I didn’t have a phone. In my senior year of highschool, my phone got stolen and it took about a week to get a replacement. That week was the longest week of my life. I found myself actually feeling sad and depressed without my phone, which is quite pathetic. When I would go out with friends, I realized just how much of our “hanging out” time actually consisted of us sitting in the same place, but in different worlds.…

It was the night before the first day of school, a new school in fact, and I was pretty eager and excited for the following day. I wasn’t sure whether to be thrilled or nervous, not knowing how my day would turn out. A few weeks prior, Mom had taken me to the store right down the block and we bought all new school supplies, so I was ready, prepared, and once again, excited. My parents were gracious enough to allow me to finish the year off, instead of transferring me to Woodland High School in the middle of the year. They knew it would be hard enough for me to switch schools, let alone in the middle of the year.…

I got your letter Tuesday last week, which was when my finals were for my accelerated classes, I hope you won’t get mad at me if I make this letter a bit shorter than my previous ones, but I am a little tired of writing so much for school. You will be happy to know I got all A’s in college so far, mainly because college is definitely easier than high school. I also now have no school Tuesday and Thursday, which means I can sleep in and write more (yay). However, that is were the good news ends.…
