I remember the day I stepped onto the airplane in Ufa to the United States nine years ago. I was sitting next to another girl from my city, who was also flying to Williamsburg, Virginia to work and learn English. We talked for a little before take-off and I could see she was bursting with emotions and started to cry her eyes out. She was trembling with anxiety and fear, whimpering about how much she was leaving behind. In contrast, I sat in my seat very still, with a huge smile on my face, gleaming with anticipation of the adventure I was about to begin. It was a moment of sheer joy to experience all of my hard work in school finally bring me to this place of opportunity.

I knew the trip was going to fun, but it was more than fun. It was life changing, and I will remember it forever. The trip had a somewhat pleasant start for me. Although I had to wake up at 3:00 in the morning to get to the terminal at the Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport around 5:30 in the morning, I thoroughly enjoyed the morning because a stranger was kind enough to inform me that I dropped my wallet.…

My sister, my mom, and I all got up very early on a crisp Thursday morning, and drove to the airport. We went through security, which was very fast because we were the only ones there, waited for a bit at the terminal, then boarded the plane. As our jet slowly accelerated into takeoff, I recall feeling very excited to be going to Orlando, but also quite nervous for the upcoming performance. We flew for a couple hours, then had a short layover, then we flew a little more. With a whoosh and a bump, our plane finally landed in Orlando, Florida.…

On the last day of school in eighth grade, when my parents told me that we were moving to the United States, all I could think of was that I was going to meet President Obama. Frankly, the only thing I knew about the country back then was Barack Obama and Tom Cruise. I was nervous and excited at the same time about visiting this wonderland because I had never dreamed of living in America of all places. I remember panicking about how I was going to introduce myself to others and what it was going to be like living with people and in places you’ve never seen before in your life except for Hollywood movies. On the other hand, I was really excited about the fact that I will finally have an opportunity to visit places like NASA, the World Trade…

In many ways, individuals often struggle against their fears. The time I experienced this was when I used to ride steers a couple summers ago. It was a hot July day and my dad and I had just finished helping my Rodeo queen sister get ready for carrying flags to start off the rodeo. After when we walked over to the stands to get ready for their riding, I was gearing up to ride one of those beasts they call steers, thinking I was going to get killed.…

In elementary school, one of my teachers was especially infamous for humiliating students. I remember him loudly shaming one of my classmates, scoffing at the work turned in. Another moment that stuck with me was when I had stayed in during tutorial for help with math concepts, and he became increasingly angry when I made a mistake on the problems.
