The past two weeks I have worked at northshore maternity and national womens community midwives. During my week at northshore it was incredibly busy and understaffed. I also remember thinking at times, where has the midwifery gone? We were so busy rushing around trying to provide safe and quality care to the women, but that fact is I feel we were too busy, with too larger case loads to provide true midwifery care. I cared for many day 1-2 sections, women with large blood losses requiring blood transfusions, a secondary PP and there was a woman with confirmed H1N1 on the ward who was unstable – but HDU wouldn’t allow her to be transferred around, and many other complex situations that really challenged my competence, knowledge and practice reasoning. …show more content…
She had just come over from the islands and had no records with her. It was interesting to see how information was gathered and how we had to try paint a picture. We did the normal booking visit and gathered her history, during this time we were able to tailor our communication to her to ensure she was understanding what were were saying. For example what a smear test was, and when the midwife asked if anyone had diabetes and was on insulin, I reitterated it in a different way asking if anyone had to give themselvs injections for their diabetes – which she understood. Her EDD was only a rough estimate as we did not have an LMP or any early scans, only one she had had the previous week in new zealand. The midwife and myself discussed her case and our theories around how her EDD could be wrong, e.g was their growth resistriction that perhaps could affect her EDD. We discussed another scan in a months time would help to paint a better picture. We communicated this to the woman during her visit and she reported she had an early scan over in the islands. She did not know the name of the practice where she had it done, and said they didn’t provide her with any information except that she was having a baby

As a healthcare provider, we are faced with some of the most grueling, challenging dilemmas. Each factor plays an important role in the quality of healthcare provided to our community: competent, available staff, appropriate resources or materials, hospitals bed availability, and the list continues. “When No One is On Call” perfectly depicts the everyday struggle of healthcare providers, when there isn’t enough staff to care for the rising influx of patients. It is unfathomable that even with new nurses graduating and entering the work field each year, the number of patients at risk for poor health care are still increasing due to shortages. Technology has developed so much over the years that we have relied on it so much. Technology is used in pretty much everything we use nowadays. Living in a neighborhood was the greatest advantage, but having kids the same age as I was even better. There was never a time we weren't outside: rain, shine, snow, miserably cold, or even scorchingly hot. There was 4 of us: 3 girls and 1 guy, all around the same age.…

On the sixth of May, in nineteen ninety eight, there was a major change in my family. That change was a baby named Tyler. I haven’t been around for very long, but I have witnessed many things. In my 17 years, I have witnessed the fall of the twin towers, the election of the first African American president, Bin Laden captured, and many other things. I have learned that family comes first and that you should enjoy every moment with them, because everything can change in the blink of an eye.…

Sometimes A failure isn’t a failure at all it’s just a minor setback. I learned this at the beginning of my 10th grade year. My teacher had told my classmates and I that we were able to be dual enrollment students at Germanna Community College. She informed us that we would have to take an entrance exam to be placed in classes that were suitable for us. When she said this we told her that we’d be ready and that we’d pass with no problems.…

This track season was the best time of my life, but it went by way too fast. I had no clue what any of the events were, but I caught on very fast because I started training with my cousin, He set the High School record for discus and still has it today. We started to work on throwing shot, and I got very good because we would work on my form for hours and because of that I was the best thrower the whole season. If you look at me compared to other throwers, I look very scrawny. I got 1st in most of my meets, but sometimes we would go against this one kid from Washington Middle and he looked like he was on steroids or something, he had a mustache too.…

This article is, in my opinion, an example of how personal narrative can sometime confuse the author’s purpose. In order to frame her arguments she discussed her experiences with her family, and specifically how she was born a twin to a stillborn sister. She explains her families lack of coping and how her family effected her life, but I failed to focus on the overarching idea that she wanted to get out because of how distracting the stories from her personal life are. Instead found myself thinking that her story was strangely personal without much justification for why it was this way. While the point of her article, the balance between truth and respect, was somewhat present overall, the sections of personal narrative that she decided to include muddled it.…
