Late August, I was enjoying my last days of summer until one late night, I overheard my dad conversing with my mother and brother about something I wasn’t aware about. This conversation led to my dad leaving with a gloomy expression on his face, and my mother attempting to calm down my panicking brother. My mother calmed my brother down, but this news my dad told them gave me a feeling of apprehension. My dad’s career change taught me to prepare for unexpected circumstances and to distribute time equally rather than focusing on one topic. Early in September, my father unexpectedly announced to me that he lost his job due to struggling economy. I was shocked, as his expertise of electrical engineering was exceptional. But at the same time, his age of fifty two made it difficult …show more content…
He couldn’t find a job in Austin and told my brother and me that he would move to San Antonio. The dad that gave advice and guidance to my brother and me to succeed in school couldn’t guide himself on what to do. Living far from my dad felt like a knight without his sword and shield. From the exhausted look on his face, I could see that he was surrendering to search for a job in Austin. Living away from a parent never crossed my mind, but it was likely to occur.
The shift in lifestyle wasn’t pleasant, but by heeding my dad’s advice and establishing a work first mindset, I did school work and maintained good grades for my first semester of sophomore year in high school, while participating in extracurriculars and volunteering when I didn’t feel like doing it. I also maintained my inner circle of friends and studied for big

As a 10 year old girl, it was hard to understand why we were always moving around. My father was a hard working man, but just couldn't find work that lasted. We moved from state to state, from Virginia to Pennsylvania, and then eventually to Ivory line, in southern Connecticut. I’ve never seen my parents as happy as when we moved into our old country house that we picked up for cheap. My father finally found a job as a construction worker.…

Technology has developed so much over the years that we have relied on it so much. Technology is used in pretty much everything we use nowadays. Living in a neighborhood was the greatest advantage, but having kids the same age as I was even better. There was never a time we weren't outside: rain, shine, snow, miserably cold, or even scorchingly hot. There was 4 of us: 3 girls and 1 guy, all around the same age.…

The past two weeks I have worked at northshore maternity and national womens community midwives. During my week at northshore it was incredibly busy and understaffed. I also remember thinking at times, where has the midwifery gone? We were so busy rushing around trying to provide safe and quality care to the women, but that fact is I feel we were too busy, with too larger case loads to provide true midwifery care. I cared for many day 1-2 sections, women with large blood losses requiring blood transfusions, a secondary PP and there was a woman with confirmed H1N1 on the ward who was unstable – but HDU wouldn’t allow her to be transferred around, and many other complex situations that really challenged my competence, knowledge and practice reasoning.…

Throughout my life, I have never been a stranger to hard work and responsibility. Growing up with a widowed mother and four younger sisters forced me to mature rapidly. I stepped into the role of a father figure in the household: being there for my sisters, and helping my mother while simultaneously coping with my father’s death. These experiences allowed me to appreciate time and helped me learn how to find balance in my life between school, work, and helping my family. In turn, these qualities were constantly tested and employed in the…

Long hours, close bonds and rigorous intellectual challenges. That is how I would describe the summer I spent as an apprentice at a local mechanic shop near my house. Each client’s car was like a puzzle needing to be deciphered, a mystery wanting to be solved. Critical thinking, pattern recognition and good old elbow grease were keys to a job well done. At the time, I had just been accepted to transfer to UT Austin and was still unsure of the profession I would pursue.…

“The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work”, said American writer, Harry Golden. This quote couldn’t be more accurate, because throughout my life I’ve stared adversity straight in the face and it hasn’t stopped me from remaining studious or even stopped me from pursuing my own dream of becoming a physician. I won’t lie and say that it was a piece of cake, because it’s been far from that. My struggle was mainly coping with and turning a blind eye towards my family’s struggle. However, it was what they always dreamed for.…
