“Let me win, but if I cannot win let me be brave in the attempt.” Many of the athletes I met used this quote as inspiration to get through some of the best weeks of their lives. Not only did they use this quote then, but they also continue to use it everyday.
In the summer of 2015 I was given the opportunity of a lifetime. Over 7,000 athletes with just about the same number of volunteers and tons and tons of spectators all gathered at the Los Angeles Coliseum for the Opening Ceremony of the 2015 Special Olympic World Games and I was lucky enough to be a volunteer at such a wonderful event. Although this happened recently, I wouldn’t have been able to be given this opportunity if I didn’t first start three years ago as the youngest coach

This person was running around frantic and looked like she was stressing about something. I remembered this lady from the cheer gym earlier that month. She was in charge of the special needs cheer team that my sister helped coach. As I finished up my rounds of hugs I overheard my sister say something to the lady.
“Bailey isn’t going to be able to help coach today, she got hurt while performing.” said Naomi in a panic.
As soon as my mom and I heard this we ran over to see if there was anything we could do to help out. Right as we walked over to the two of them my sister had already turned around and asked me, “Can you please fill in for Bailey on Invincible?”

Without further hesitation I gladly accepted her offer and was rushed back to the warm up room to learn Bailey’s part. I learned the parts that Bailey was in and within 15 minutes I performed the routine with Pacific Coast Magic Team

It was at the Los Angeles Coliseum. We met at a sorority house at USC along with many other cheer teams. As soon as I arrived I fell in love with the event. There were tons of athletes, boys and girls; all have their own unique personality. Some of them had incredible stories.
Once we all got onto a charter bus we shuttled over to the Coliseum. Once we arrived we walked into a huge crowd of people. There must have been thousands of people waiting to get in. We were luckily able to skip the line to get in and went in through a side gate. The LA Coliseum was huge and overwhelming. To make things worse there were many obstacles to face.
On of the many issues was we had an athlete that cheered who was in a wheelchair. Her name is Brianna. Brianna has Cerebral Palsy and very weak muscles. She can walk short distance but when it comes to long distance she uses the support of her wheelchair. This caused a major issue because we were expected to be on the field of the stadium and to get down to the stadium, we had to travel down hundreds of stairs. So the only way to get her down the stairs was for one person to carry her wheelchair and for two people to link arms with her and give her the support she needs. So naturally I stepped up to help walk her down the stairs. The whole thing was very stressful because her safety was in my hands. She was also getting frustrated because of how long and hot our walk was. But in the end

“We’ve never lost an American in space and we’re sure as hell not gonna lose one on my watch! Failure is not an option!” Said by Gene Kranz on the movi Apollo 13, the ‘Failure is not an option’ phrase has been used by various action movies as a cliché which shows authority and badassery. Every character on this kind of movie says that failing on their specific job (or mission, if you really want to be that badass) is not what they are expecting. Fail this mission and you don’t exist on our lives, that’s it.…

11:00 am I wake up to a perfectly clean room with a perfect breakfast: sausage, pancakes, bacon, and cinnamon rolls all sitting right next to my bed. I eat my breakfast and get ready for the day. I go downstairs to see my friends Austen, Zach, and Elias down there holding four tickets to the Super Bowl game tonight and a jet sitting outside in the field. I had slept in a little past what we had planned on leaving by but it didn’t matter too much we still had plenty of time to do what we wanted to.…

The Tournoi International de Hockey is the biggest youth hockey tournament in North America and is held each year in Quebec City, Canada. Every year thousands of kids ages 10-12 come to this tournament, and I was fortunate to be one of the selected players from Georgia to play in this tournament. Through this two week tournament, I got the chance to stay with a family from Quebec and experience what they do on a daily basis. With this family, whom I am still in contact with today, I learned a new culture, got to tour the city and have some memories that I will never forget. To add to the experience, all the games were played the Pepsi Colisee, which is a NHL sized rink.…

The parking lot was packed and people were lined all the way down the fence. Standing in the dugout to cheering on one of my teammates you could not tell it was a not a major-league baseball game. Someone that were just driving by would have no idea this was not your average baseball game. All play is a baseball and softball organization for kids with mental handicaps and physical handicaps.…

In the popular teen-fiction novel, Twilight, Stephanie Meyer writes “Just because we’ve been… dealt a certain hand… doesn’t mean that we can’t choose to rise above- to conquer the boundaries of a destiny that none of us wanted”. Just because one has a bad life or their life takes a wrong turn, does not mean one shouldn’t try to change. This quote fits today because a lot of people have been rising above the odds or fighting for what they want or deserve. People should fight to make their way in life to get what they and other people deserve, no matter the situation. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, fought for other people's rights.…
