With the last of my Final Exams now finished and school officially ended, Summer had official begun. However, my Summer Vacation would not consist of long days spent at a beach or in an air conditioned room. No longer would Netflix be the only thing on my mind, one which school squeezed every last bit of patience and integrity out of. This vacation marked a new beginning for me, where I would have to obtain certain qualities to persevere through to the end. For me, the first day of my summer job was one of the most uncertain that I have ever experienced in my life. In fact, the last day of school was also the first day of being employed as an intern at the Rhode Island State House. There was no joking around; once I finished my Algebra II Honors course at Toll Gate High School, I nearly immediately started my job. That June afternoon was also the beginning of a time where I would need to learn independence to thrive. …show more content…

The aforementioned qualities are also universal traits that all, young and old, must have in order to merely function in life. From my experiences over vacation, I learned that availability is crucial to maintain a proper environment in which to achieve one’s fullest potential. Personally, a summer job, although legitimate, is a pretest to the test that is life; where one can make mistakes. From mistakes made while employed as an intern, one develops skills necessary to become functioning component in a world where mistakes can be deadly. Most importantly however, I learned how much responsibility is required to become independent; to be on you own. In the process of working a summer job, I learned what it meant to be not only independent, but also a functioning component of our society as a

Intern Nation by author Ross Perlin analyzes the current state of internships in astoundingly immensedetail. In specific, Perlin focuses on the variety of internships, including “the good, the bad, and the ugly; the paid and the unpaid; the ostensibly academic and the completely untethered; part-time internships lasting a few weeks and full-time ones last a year” (XVI). These elements are described through first-hand accounts; for example, the interns at Disney World and the government interns on Capitol Hills. These elements are also described through in-depth investigation; for example, the 18 percent of interns who work without pay or the evidence of companies and government organizations firing full-time paid staff and replacing them with…

In Chapter 5 it was interesting to me to read in the section about temp job that a temp job can be better than an internship. Instead of going to south beach for spring break that it is better to stay back and volunteer is a plan that I can agree with. The selection about volunteering I found beneficial because I have been volunteering since I want 5 years now I can see it has helped with building my resume, I am gaining new skills and experiences, and didn’t know I was networking.…

“Let me win, but if I cannot win let me be brave in the attempt.” Many of the athletes I met used this quote as inspiration to get through some of the best weeks of their lives. Not only did they use this quote then, but they also continue to use it everyday. In the summer of 2015 I was given the opportunity of a lifetime.…

The concern for many students is finding and landing a job after graduation, and one particularly fantastic way towards getting a job is obtaining an internship opportunity during school. In terms of internship opportunities, there are many different types and varieties such as volunteer, stipend, and paid and unpaid internships. Anya Kamenetz, a columnist for The Village Voice, firmly believes, though, that unpaid internships has many downfalls and disadvantages for students and for the economy as a whole. According her arguments, students should take paid internships or part-time jobs instead of unpaid internships. She emphasizes and brings up important notions that does require attention but, overall, unpaid internships actually goes beyond…

High school seniors and many entering college students often feel that high school hasn't prepared them for the “real world”. The adjustment to a new work or educational environment creates many unexpected situations and expectations that leave students feeling unprepared and less confident. Both businesses and colleges agree that graduates lack hard and soft skills. Students also believe it would've been helpful to receive training from the businesses and schools. Implementing internships in the high school curriculum can correct this problem.…

This article is, in my opinion, an example of how personal narrative can sometime confuse the author’s purpose. In order to frame her arguments she discussed her experiences with her family, and specifically how she was born a twin to a stillborn sister. She explains her families lack of coping and how her family effected her life, but I failed to focus on the overarching idea that she wanted to get out because of how distracting the stories from her personal life are. Instead found myself thinking that her story was strangely personal without much justification for why it was this way. While the point of her article, the balance between truth and respect, was somewhat present overall, the sections of personal narrative that she decided to include muddled it.…

“Of the 75% of students that said they had an internship, 61% had a job offer by the winter of their senior year” (Rodkin, 2014). This is just one of the many statistics that emphasizes the need for internships in today’s business economy. The use of both paid and unpaid internships has been occurring for as long as humans can look back. Originally, internships were more like apprenticeships, in that the employer worked with one pupil to help them gain a specific trade. Now, “As an intern, you’ll gain valuable knowledge of companies and industry culture, trends, and key players, which all contribute to how you’ll choose your future career”…
