I remember looking at the pages, mesmerized by pictures of places, animals, foods, and people so different from anything I had ever seen. This fascination was one of my most defining interests, which began before kindergarten and has continued throughout my life.

I won my school competition again and made it to state. This time, I made it to the tiebreaker round. I vowed I would return again, and I did. In sixth grade, I won the school bee, made it to state, and placed in the Top 10 where I faced the state champions from the past two years. As other competitors dropped like flies, I made it to the top three, where I eventually slipped up. In seventh grade, I made my fourth appearance at state, made the Top 10. This time, I came out on top. I won a trip to our nation’s Capital for me and my Social Studies teacher. At the National Bee, I was disappointed I only got two of seven questions, but I learned more in those four days than ever before. I was with 53 geography prodigies from around the country, and it was very intimidating at times. My first interaction with my roommates was them quizzing each other on the states of India, of which I knew none. This was a massive difference from the comparable cakewalk that was the state

For starters, I would not sit and hide; I would get together a group of people with a variety of skills, like electronics, survival, etc. I would lead my group out of my school and bring them to some sort of nearby safe haven; not a store, or anything of the likes, since most people will be rushing them. The best place for us to go would be some form of neighborhood that can be easily roadblocked. Everyone knows that supplies are necessary in a zombie-infested world.…

“Even though we've changed and we're all finding our own place in the world, we all know that when the tears fall or the smile spreads across our face, we'll come to each other because no matter where this crazy world takes us, nothing will ever change so much to the point where we're not all still friends” (ThinkExist.com). Through the ups and downs in life, the twists and turns certain things will remain steady. One might take for granted, the safety of suburbia. I was led to believe by my parents that in "a neighborhood like this," I would be perfectly safe. In the 7th grade, I had to take the bus that dropped me off quite a ways away from my house, meaning that I had to walk quite the distance to my house. It wasn't a major problem, just a minor inconvenience at best. The main reason I took this specific route was to save some minutes sleeping in the early mornings, but I digress.…

On a blistering cold Saturday morning in November, my parents and I traveled north to see the 150th meeting between Lehigh and Lafayette at Yankee Stadium. My sister, a Lehigh freshman at the time and already in The Big Apple for the weekend, was texting pictures of the excitement. The NYSE, the Empire State Building, and the subway crowds all sporting brown and white. How could this small university from Bethlehem capture the attention of the greatest city in the world? Then it hit me… it was all about tradition.…

I’ve always been the black sheep of my family. I grew up only knowing adults who did physical labor or worked their way up in a technical profession. The only higher education anyone had was from the community college in town. My mom, sister, grandmothers, aunts, cousins were all young mothers; their work anchored in homemaking and part-time jobs. I had no idea, or encouragement, that I could ever make it to a traditional four-year university, let alone have the resources to pay for it.…

I was born in Honey Brook, Pennsylvania. This would definitely fall under the umbrella of "small town" as it's reported population during the 2010 census was 1,700. I was never an observant child, as I was always playing video games, reading books, or doing some grade school homework. I remember only knowing a small handful of people, namely just those who lived in our little trailer park at the time. Everyone had that small town eccentricity we so often see romanticized.…
