I did not see myself attending college after high school, even though a small part of me wanted to for the social aspect and because I actually enjoy learning new things. I didn't have much guidance from my elders, they were more caught up with taking care of my younger siblings. I knew my family could not afford to send me to school, and I wanted independence from them and left home at 18 to work and rent an apartment, which I did. K was working low paying jobs just barely surviving and I knew I could do something bigger with my life, so I attempted to attend a trade school for visual communications, with no luck since I could not find time to work to pay rent, and attend school simultaneously, and all I acquired was an extremely damaging

If I had decided to not go to college, be it community or university level, my life would have stayed the same way it was in high school – I would not have been able to proceed further at my job, my depression might have worsened, and dependency on my parents would have increased. When I was in the 8th grade, I began working at my town’s public library. Eventually, I was hired on as a part-time employee during…

As a military child, I left the United States with my family at the age of five and spent eight years living overseas at duty stations in Japan, Germany, and Italy. We traveled extensively during vacations to over 20 different countries. As a result, I claim proficiency in ordering french fries and apple juice in several different languages. Although moving has brought me some misfortune, and many people would say that living overseas qualifies as adversity, I never felt it was such.…

Throughout my childhood, I was never encouraged by my family to go towards the college pathway and I would never question myself or them about it. I didn’t acknowledge the meaning of attending college or university or what they were. I wasn’t conscious of how life was after high school— I just knew that I had to get my high school diploma and then get a job at McDonald’s or Subway, because they’re common places to get hired at. I always had the feeling that I was going to end up like my siblings: high school dropouts with no education or being a pregnant Latina at a young age and settle down early with their possible spouses. Additionally, I had the feeling of ending up like my mother that raised all her children through welfare in California, and still is at this point.…

Life started getting rough for me around the time that my dad was terminated (11/10/2016). Everything seems to be coming at me all at once. Asides from studying for finals, I was also focused on working two jobs because everything in the house became my responsibility. Mortgage became my responsibility, bills became mine, car loans became mine, expenses in the house became mine as well. I became the support system for my family, both emotionally and financially.…

For starters, I would not sit and hide; I would get together a group of people with a variety of skills, like electronics, survival, etc. I would lead my group out of my school and bring them to some sort of nearby safe haven; not a store, or anything of the likes, since most people will be rushing them. The best place for us to go would be some form of neighborhood that can be easily roadblocked. Everyone knows that supplies are necessary in a zombie-infested world.…

Have you ever had something minor happen and multiple major things come out of it? I had an experience like that where I learned something interesting. It was an average Thursday, although it was a little hot for November, and it was recess time. If only I hadn’t had that accident I would not be where I am today. Every day I am thankful and grateful for the accident that I was involved in while in Iraq. I always said while joking but serious at the same time, that God if I was not in the military I will give myself to you completely in ministry. A few months while deployed to Iraq my vehicle was hit with an I.E.D. and the armor truck rolled down a hill on top of me and shattered my right knee and many other injuries. I believe God didn’t waste any time moving me into the direction of my purpose.…

“Even though we've changed and we're all finding our own place in the world, we all know that when the tears fall or the smile spreads across our face, we'll come to each other because no matter where this crazy world takes us, nothing will ever change so much to the point where we're not all still friends” (ThinkExist.com). Through the ups and downs in life, the twists and turns certain things will remain steady. Friends may not always be around, family may not always be around, but occasionally there will be someone who sticks around no matter what. I found out throughout my life that change is inevitable, and life is full of uncertainties. Think of all the changes that have happened in life and the people who were there through all…

One might take for granted, the safety of suburbia. I was led to believe by my parents that in "a neighborhood like this," I would be perfectly safe. In the 7th grade, I had to take the bus that dropped me off quite a ways away from my house, meaning that I had to walk quite the distance to my house. It wasn't a major problem, just a minor inconvenience at best. The main reason I took this specific route was to save some minutes sleeping in the early mornings, but I digress.…

I was in the middle of my 8th Grade year when my mother sat me down to talk about what was going on in Los Angles, California. That day I got off the bus like usual and was going to do my homework, but before I could do anything my mother stopped me with a very worried look on her face and I was immediately alarmed by what she is going to say to me. She then enunciated “ Your grandma is in the hospital and I need to see her as soon as I can.” I asked her what was wrong with her mother, she then explained to me that my grandmother had kidney stones and they were unable to do surgery because her body was too fragile and she would not make it.…
