As a young girl, my neighborhood friend and I would stargaze consistently throughout the summer. We would lay on her trampoline, look at the stars, and have detailed conversations about space. While we were lying down in the palpable darkness, we would identify as many constellations as possible. Although, the main night that stands out to me, was when her father brought his telescope outside to give us a close viewing of Jupiter. That moment still affects me today since I have continued to stargaze in my yard or when I’m in the vast cornfield around my neighborhood. I have realized from my passion of viewing constellations, it has led to my interest in aerospace engineering, as well as, with my fascination in visiting engineering open houses

Not long ago I was able to observe the brilliance of a total lunar eclipse. As the late hours of the night unwound, I watched Earth’s cratered companion become ever more shrouded in shadows until only a dark patch of starless sky remained. Soon after, the moon burst into color as all the most magnificent sunrises and sunsets in the world were simultaneously reflected upon its surface. Nights like these keep my dreams alive and increase my desire to observe and study such happenings for a living which I can only achieve by attending…

As a military child, I left the United States with my family at the age of five and spent eight years living overseas at duty stations in Japan, Germany, and Italy. We traveled extensively during vacations to over 20 different countries. As a result, I claim proficiency in ordering french fries and apple juice in several different languages. Although moving has brought me some misfortune, and many people would say that living overseas qualifies as adversity, I never felt it was such.…

Technology has developed so much over the years that we have relied on it so much. Technology is used in pretty much everything we use nowadays. Living in a neighborhood was the greatest advantage, but having kids the same age as I was even better. There was never a time we weren't outside: rain, shine, snow, miserably cold, or even scorchingly hot. There was 4 of us: 3 girls and 1 guy, all around the same age.…

I have always loved riding in cars. After a long day in first grade, I used to fall asleep to the engine purring in my mother's Honda Odyssey, even though it was only a 5-minute drive home. As I grew, and graduated into the shotgun seat, it became natural and enjoyable to look out the window. Seeing my world passing by through that smudged glass, I would daydream what I could do with it.…

On a snowy Christmas day at Sunrise Peak, there is a whiteout at the acme; snow is falling heavily, visibility is low, and the wind is unforgiving as it clashes against my bare face. I slowly start my descent down the mountain. As I begin to cut back and forth in a comfortable manner on my board I slip up. I try to turn to follow the slopes path, but I turned too sharply. The front of my board digs into the snow abruptly and causes me to plunge forward.…

Have you ever had something minor happen and multiple major things come out of it? I had an experience like that where I learned something interesting. It was an average Thursday, although it was a little hot for November, and it was recess time. I was running from my friend Connor when I decided to run under the slides, where a hornets nest happened to be right above.…

Regardless of the fact that I have lived near the beach all my life, it’s not often I go on a long walk on a beach similar to the Smith Point County Park; nor have I witnessed the effects of a storm to such an extent in my life. A few of the major sections of the beach have been devastated due to the recent storms. These storms caused waves that have done remarkable damage to the point that I was having difficulty walking from the incline it created, days later it remains to cause an issue. The most chilling of all is how the dunes are slowly being worn down, from the constant bombardment of large waves from storms like Hurricane Sandy. Even though hurricanes are known for destroying our homes.…

For as long as I can remember, as a child I was raised to believe that a man should be the king of his castle. When I was five years old, that statement became a fable to me. My right foot slams on the brakes as my ears register the sound of metal on metal. I throw my car into reverse, before jumping out to assess the damage. An otherwise pristine, navy blue BMW is blemished, two chips of paint missing to reveal the white plaster underneath. Acutely aware of the crowded parking lot, I revert to autopilot, parking my car with the careful precision I had not employed since my license test six months earlier. I slowly crawl out of my car to peek at the scratch one more time.…

A week into Fall, and the temperature was still lulling at 90 degrees, like the mosquitos that swayed comfortably above the bayou that ran for miles outside my English II class. The bayou would eventually diverge by my neighborhood. In class, the philosophical discussion on the Power of One by Bryce Courtenay also diverged. If Peekay could reach compos mentis (full command of one’s mind) after years of training, epitomized by a drunken bar fight, when would we ambitious students scrawled across plastic chairs and creaking wooden tables, reach compos mentis? Was it in adulthood, after college, or after the birth of our first child?…

In my earlier years of school, I dreaded going to school and I wasn’t skilled in public speaking. I had a terribly hard time talking to new people and often avoided social situations. These being among the traits many consider unfavorable, I passed up on great opportunities that I had been given due to their social aspect and the potential for me to embarrass myself. Starting my freshman year of highschool, I was aware that adjusting to an independent lifestyle where I worked a job and made my own money was one of my main priorities.…
