One might take for granted, the safety of suburbia. I was led to believe by my parents that in "a neighborhood like this," I would be perfectly safe. In the 7th grade, I had to take the bus that dropped me off quite a ways away from my house, meaning that I had to walk quite the distance to my house. It wasn't a major problem, just a minor inconvenience at best. The main reason I took this specific route was to save some minutes sleeping in the early mornings, but I digress. So around 3 weeks pass since I first started taking the bus and nothing really major happens. The only think really worth knowing up to this point was the occasional stranger engaged in a full one-sided conversation or a stray dog here and there.
Needless to say, I had gotten comfortable with the route home after riding the bus each day.

As I walk past a house, I hear the door creak open, followed by a "Hey, kid!" I looked to my right and I saw two guys, both looking about 17, one was fat and one was tall and skinny. "We're having a party in here and wanted to know if you wanted any of the candy we had." I knew that this was a lie right off off the bat, the house was dark and I heard no normal chatter and party-like noises, no cars on the road. I responded with a "no thank you"and immediately sped up my pace while walking away. It was a good thing I did because less that a minute later I heard the same voice say, "Hey, kid!" I turned to see the two guys, less that 50 feet behind me. The tall skinny one was on a bike, the larger one walking beside him. He said something along the lines of, "where do you live?" Without thinking, I bolted down the street as fast as I could. My house still being a half mile

This time we saw something too. We saw what appeared to be a man running through our backyard. I then looked down at the lock on the backdoor and realized it was unlocked. When I reached down and locked the deadbolt, the noise from locking the door startled the man that was in our yard. He stopped on the patio and was now on the other side of the door staring right back at me.…

I vividly remember the first day of sixth grade; I looked at my schedule just “knowing” I would switch out of the “Odyssey of the Mind” class, especially since I had never even heard of it before. I had no idea that exactly two years later I would be the one standing in the middle of the Iowa University stadium, performing in front of hundreds of other passionate competitors from over a hundred countries around the world. I have always been good at painting, drawing, and coming up with witty answers to teacher's questions. However, only a few other students understood what I was saying. I was never able to put my creative skills to good use, besides the rare once-a-quarter projects we would have.…
