I can recall the beginning of my college exploration during my freshman year of high school. Straight out of middle school, college sounded like a crazy idea that only existed in dreams. My guidance counselor at the time was so enthusiastic for us to go to college. She was spewing out so much information to me I was overwhelmed. As a first generation college student, this all was something very foreign to me and my family— but I was intrigued by it. My first ever college campus visit was the University of Wisconsin-Madison. From the tight-knit neighborhood of my Milwaukee life, the campus was a totally new and enticing environment that excited me. I saw busy streets, students on bikes, and of course red and white everywhere! People seemed

College is the best four years of your life, they say. As I entered my freshman year of college, it was filled with a variety of emotions and uncertainty. Moving 6 hours away from my hometown, in a completely unknown environment, and not knowing a single sole was the hardest thing i’ve ever gone through. The first weeks of college was a culture shock to say the least. I was exposed to so much more then I thought I would.…

As a military child, I left the United States with my family at the age of five and spent eight years living overseas at duty stations in Japan, Germany, and Italy. We traveled extensively during vacations to over 20 different countries. As a result, I claim proficiency in ordering french fries and apple juice in several different languages. Although moving has brought me some misfortune, and many people would say that living overseas qualifies as adversity, I never felt it was such.…

Two developmental milestones that I have faced during my twenty-two years of life, thus far, are beginning college and ending college. Starting college in particular was a developmental milestone because it was different than anything I have ever experienced and for my family to experience as well. I am the first generation in my family to attend college. Both of my parents went straight into the work force after they graduated high school, and were not encouraged by their parents to attend college. I have two older siblings who decided not to attend college, because they wanted to go straight into the work force, and long term did not want to have to worry about paying back student loans.…

When the opportunity came to find community service hours for my Human Growth and Development class, I knew I wanted to help out somebody who works hard to provide me safety. I talked to my dad after finding out I needed hours and he advised me to talk to the sheriff. The sheriff told me that he would gladly appreciate my help and he decided on a task for me: washing patrol cars. I thought that washing cars seemed like an easy enough task. The day before my service my dad informed me that I needed to bring our car washing supplies from home with me to the sheriff’s office the next day.…

Long hours, close bonds and rigorous intellectual challenges. That is how I would describe the summer I spent as an apprentice at a local mechanic shop near my house. Each client’s car was like a puzzle needing to be deciphered, a mystery wanting to be solved. Critical thinking, pattern recognition and good old elbow grease were keys to a job well done. At the time, I had just been accepted to transfer to UT Austin and was still unsure of the profession I would pursue.…

Memories of the time that I made an “unexpected” friend were back when I was in a brick and mortar school. My life had taken a quick change; when I became sick with the flu. Numerous people who get the flu will get over with this in several days or maybe within two weeks, but some people can develop complications of the flu. Imagine your life being healthy, doing sports and out in the real world. However, this can change in minutes.…

During my infancy my parents have said that at the beginning I had switched day and night. During the day I would be asleep for the most part and at night I would be awake and crying all the time. The way that my dad stopped that was he took off my diaper and hit my butt twice, after that I pretty much slept all night. My mother was the one who took care of me the most. She said that my temperament was easy because while she napped I would always stay quiet while playing and only woke her up for the bathroom and when hungry.…

I experienced two big realities at the start of my college experience, both can be described as disappointing and surprising. I had heard rumors of what to expect out of college from my friends, what was portrayed in entertainment media such as YouTube, Facebook, or just general TV shows. Two of my expectations from college did not turn out as anticipated. I had the impression college would be more social than what I was lead to believe, as well as the intense academic difference from high school. As I worked through my first semester, I became aware of how college is more academically challenging and not as fun and social as high school.…
