Regardless of the fact that I have lived near the beach all my life, it’s not often I go on a long walk on a beach similar to the Smith Point County Park; nor have I witnessed the effects of a storm to such an extent in my life. A few of the major sections of the beach have been devastated due to the recent storms. These storms caused waves that have done remarkable damage to the point that I was having difficulty walking from the incline it created, days later it remains to cause an issue. The most chilling of all is how the dunes are slowly being worn down, from the constant bombardment of large waves from storms like Hurricane Sandy. Even though hurricanes are known for destroying our homes. Having a Nor’easter can be just as rough or worse, …show more content…
There’s always unique opportunities to have and experience isn’t there? Unluckily I never obtained the chance to spot the whale off the shore, just the birds following them. Maybe one day I’ll spot a whale, hopefully closer which would be incredible. Learning and experiencing unfamiliar things is all life is about, learning being the keyword. Nothing is greater than learning something different about the world, you or even out in space. Let’s considering something a little smaller than space, though. Interestingly Long Island used to be the definition of the Wild West. When this cozy state of ours began to first thrive, Great Britain and others would send ships to New York City. During this time period, they were limited in the ways they could navigate the route to the city. To take advantage of this, pirates would ransack ships that would accidently hit sand bars. When you believe you know it all or haven’t researched a certain topic, there’s always something new you’ll learn about yourself or the place you’re in. No matter if it’s an event that will happen or in the past, this world is timelessly

As there is infrastructure which has been built on the primary sections of the dunes it can be dangerous as it is threatening the infrastructures stability making it a higher risk for the residents and the people in the wider community when it comes to sand dune erosion. “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” This quote by André Gide clearly shows that in order to discover we have to take that leap of faith. Most of us in this room have had events in our lives where we had to look further than what we have in the front of us. We have made discoveries that have transformed our way of seeing things.…

About four years ago I was playing club lacrosse for the Villanova Wildcats travel team. I was about thirteen years old when I experienced one of my first significant lessons of failure. At a young age many do not understand the importance of failures and short comings, and how it is essential to learn, grow, and improve. We think success comes easy and without trial which is not realistic. My life changing failure taught me many things: the strength of teamwork, the power of preparation and will, and how to be a better competitor.…

Using natural language to communicate is, for the vast majority of us, something we do every day from a very young age. That said, when we look closely, communication is not without its fair share of hurdles. Indeed, is a fact of human social intercourse that individuals do not always say what they mean, or mean what they say in conversational contexts. In this paper, we will expound upon the issue of implicatures present in human communication, as described by Grice. In addition, we will present two related theories which attempt to elucidate how human beings are able to grasp what others mean with seemingly little effort.…

I have been through so many experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. However, there is one experience in particular that moved me in ways I can hardly put into words. My freshman year of high school, I was given the opportunity to join the Klondike FFA Milk Quality Career Development Event team. Studying and competing in this event led me to develop a fighting hunger for winning. Halfway through my first year, I realized that I did not like to lose.…

During my senior year of High School, I have dealt with a negative educational experience that has changed my life to this day. In the month of November of 2014, I was waiting for an acceptance letter from Stockton University hopefully to obtain a career in Occupational Therapy. Throughout High School I became an excellent student having a 3.9 GPA, attending various amounts of community service, and was a varsity player for lacrosse and cheerleading. While completing these accomplishments, I have dealt with a major health issue that has impacted my life. Unfortunately, my hopes of getting into the school was shattered.…

Initially when I took the test I received a tension quotient of 43%. The main reason for my high tension quotient, I believe, was mostly due to the way the questions were worded, and because of that I ended up retaking the test. I forgot to write down the tensions that I had in my first run. In my second run, my tension quotient dropped to 7%, and I had only one tension, which was also present in my first run. The one inconsistency is as follows: “You agreed that: It is always wrong to take another person's life...…

My first boyfriend was Ryan Sadler; he was my first love too. It was my last day of middle school before moving to colorado and a whole bunch of people wrote me letters, got my number, and said their goodbyes. One person in particular Chandler Cunningham got my number but waited to text me until I had already moved. He called me one night from his friends phone that he had borrowed while spending the night. After he left the next morning I had texted the number thinking it was his.…

This article is, in my opinion, an example of how personal narrative can sometime confuse the author’s purpose. In order to frame her arguments she discussed her experiences with her family, and specifically how she was born a twin to a stillborn sister. She explains her families lack of coping and how her family effected her life, but I failed to focus on the overarching idea that she wanted to get out because of how distracting the stories from her personal life are. Instead found myself thinking that her story was strangely personal without much justification for why it was this way. While the point of her article, the balance between truth and respect, was somewhat present overall, the sections of personal narrative that she decided to include muddled it.…

Imagine the world without beaches, especially the state of Florida. “For many people, Florida is beaches” (Hellegaard). Beach erosion is a big deal to a lot of places, especially the ones that get a majority of their tourism from the beaches that are visited year round; Florida gets most of its tourism revenue from the beach goers so when the beach has been annihilated from the big storms that form off the coastline, aka Hurricanes; no matter the force of the storm, the beaches are almost always affected. Many factors from said storms affect the beaches; high waves and the storm surges are the two factors that contribute to the problem, sometimes they can be very disastrous. They cause three types of coastal changes on our beautiful beaches and they are collision; where the beach dunes are eroded by both waves and the storm surge( the rise in the sea due to pressure changes and wind that comes with a storm),…
