What do Leonardo Da Vinci, Bill Clinton, and I all have in common? Active participation in procrastination—a practice frowned upon in today’s society, but not even Noah of the Ark could have prepared for the imposing amount of water on my already heavily-saturated carpets. You would think that a mini ocean within one's bedroom would lead to a rotten seed. On the contrary, delaying the much-needed waterproofing of our house gave root to and was the direct catalyst for the independent adult I am today. The flood damaged most of my possessions, left my room dangerous and smelling of mold, and devastated what I called home, but it couldn’t have been a better example of a blessing in disguise.

The flood was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I shared a four-bedroom house with my depressed mother, two brothers, one of whom is mentally disabled, an alcoholic grandfather, a hard-working grandmother, an uncle and his two daughters, and thirteen animals. This perpetual chaos was compounded by my family lacking the inclination and to fix my room. The hazardous environment created could never be conducive to learning. There, my pride and guilty conscious led me to help her in any way I could, including cleaning, cooking, and chauffeuring. Anxiety began to creep in as I realized the importance of getting a job to support myself, and I started searching for anyone who would be willing to hire a high schooler and offer decent pay—not an easy task. People teased me, but they didn’t understand how serious a job it was. One mistake on my part could lead to severe repercussions, and not necessarily with Mrs. Seuter, but with the

For starters, I would not sit and hide; I would get together a group of people with a variety of skills, like electronics, survival, etc. I would lead my group out of my school and bring them to some sort of nearby safe haven; not a store, or anything of the likes, since most people will be rushing them. The best place for us to go would be some form of neighborhood that can be easily roadblocked. Everyone knows that supplies are necessary in a zombie-infested world.…

On a snowy Christmas day at Sunrise Peak, there is a whiteout at the acme; snow is falling heavily, visibility is low, and the wind is unforgiving as it clashes against my bare face. I slowly start my descent down the mountain. As I begin to cut back and forth in a comfortable manner on my board I slip up. I try to turn to follow the slopes path, but I turned too sharply. The front of my board digs into the snow abruptly and causes me to plunge forward.…

Regardless of the fact that I have lived near the beach all my life, it’s not often I go on a long walk on a beach similar to the Smith Point County Park; nor have I witnessed the effects of a storm to such an extent in my life. A few of the major sections of the beach have been devastated due to the recent storms. These storms caused waves that have done remarkable damage to the point that I was having difficulty walking from the incline it created, days later it remains to cause an issue. The most chilling of all is how the dunes are slowly being worn down, from the constant bombardment of large waves from storms like Hurricane Sandy. Even though hurricanes are known for destroying our homes.…

My right foot slams on the brakes as my ears register the sound of metal on metal. I throw my car into reverse, before jumping out to assess the damage. An otherwise pristine, navy blue BMW is blemished, two chips of paint missing to reveal the white plaster underneath. Acutely aware of the crowded parking lot, I revert to autopilot, parking my car with the careful precision I had not employed since my license test six months earlier. I slowly crawl out of my car to peek at the scratch one more time.…

One of the first times that I had ever spoken in front of a large audience, was when I was six. I was the angel in our Christmas Eve nativity service at church. When someone had asked me if I wanted to do it, I was pretty hesitant, but still decided to do it. I worked really hard to memorize the lines and get into character, but as soon as I got onto the stage, I froze. I was not physically able to move.…

“Even though we've changed and we're all finding our own place in the world, we all know that when the tears fall or the smile spreads across our face, we'll come to each other because no matter where this crazy world takes us, nothing will ever change so much to the point where we're not all still friends” (ThinkExist.com). Through the ups and downs in life, the twists and turns certain things will remain steady. Friends may not always be around, family may not always be around, but occasionally there will be someone who sticks around no matter what. I found out throughout my life that change is inevitable, and life is full of uncertainties. Think of all the changes that have happened in life and the people who were there through all…
