Fall of 2010 and spring of 2012 were the 2 semesters I was inactive after graduating from the University of San Diego. In the fall of 2010 I was acclimating to a life back in Los Angeles and actively looking for a position where I was serving others. I secured a tutoring position in an underserved community for students in grades k thru 12 in the areas of math, science, and English for a startup tutoring company called 1 On 1 Academic Tutors. My greatest competitive advantage became my hunger to succeed and to actualize the life that my parents envisioned for me when they migrated from Mexico. Within the year, I was promoted to Senior Contract Administrator and by fall of 2012 I was creating spreadsheets alongside graphs and analyzing them

My time at Indiana State was not as successful as I would have liked it to be. When I first arrived Fall of 2013 After the end of the Fall 2013 semester at ISU I was put on academic probation, it did not come as a surprise but was still a shock. I thought I could breeze through college like I did High School, never studying and not putting in a ton of effort but still make decent grades. What I did not expect was the challenge I was given by ISU, I could not skate through my education like I had in the past, when I was at ISU I needed to be an active participant. “Mia can you go walk A field and the corral?” my supervisor asked over the walkie-talkie as I finished bringing in fifteen excited dogs from group play. By this point I had already walked more than a dozen dogs, fed half the kennel, and taken out over a hundred dogs for one of their daily outings. I was exhausted and now I had to pick up a field full of dog feces.…

Journalist: Why do you think people come here? Joey: When people think of the local music store, they think of the past. Our society has moved so much towards an online presence to where people click buttons and have stuff delivered to them. I think that the average customer has a yearning to participate in a local community, a store that is somewhat connected to the arts.…

Slowly as I wake up I recognize the way that I have changed into something I have adored so dearly. Maybe I like it better this way, with no feeling of intrusion only leaving with a sense unsure of my belongings. The hardness of my cover and the intricacy of my content are not intended for frail fingertips and weak personalities. I feel like have been opened here and there. My spine stroked by unstable hands, held with a broken center, my pages marginally skimmed through, just to be put down mid-sentence.…

I could relate to with this word because there was a time where I felt I was going through it and experiencing a sympathetic division. It was Sunday in the afternoon and my little brother, who at the time is ten years old, was having his soccer game take place. Crowds around the field were very tense because of the two teams being big rivals. As well as the crowds be tensed up so were the players with each other. While the game went by there were many times in which the players were having conflicts with each other, causing the anger around everyone to increase.…

Sometimes the best opportunities come from the most challenging situations. When I was in sixth grade I stress fractured my hip. Of course, this was a real disappointment just like it always is when any young, athletic kid hurts him or herself. However the timing of it couldn’t have been worse. This happened right at the beginning of my ski racing season, right when all my friends and I were anticipating how fun the upcoming season would be, and whether we would make it to Championships or not.…

I rode the bus every day in middle school and would interact with a few people who also lived in my neighborhood. They were in no way my friends, but the circumstances had left us stuck on a bus for 30 minutes with a different group of students who normally wouldn't interact. One girl was very religious and we would eventually ease into a logical debate about religion. Every afternoon as we rode from the school into our old neighborhood. I am a very confrontational person, and when I feel as if one side is understated in an argument, and then I will surely be a member of that side.…

I’m one of those mundane Newark students who wasn’t born in the greatest neighborhood or born with the happiest life. What makes me different from the rest is my story. I’m a seventeen-year-old young woman who never met the woman who gave birth to her or met her biological family because I was left in a car when I was a few days old. At the age of four I found out I was a foster child and I was going to get adopted at the age of five.…

Throughout life many children are faced with questions surfacing around what they hope to be in the future. At a very young age I had discovered that one day I would want to become a very successful lawyer, however, it wasn’t until my first year of college that I decided that I wanted my career to be focused on helping those who were wrongly convicted and in desperate need of a hand of help.
