I went from a young boy out of Doula, Cameroun, who did not know a word of English, to a young adult who was a finalist at Roberto Clemente Middle school national geography bee, to an adult who earned straight A’s, honor roll, scholar athlete of the month and took IB classes from my community college while still in high school. Coming from a low income family, my mom struggled a lot with the bills, and our house was unfortunately taken by the government because we were no longer able to afford the mortgage. For most of my life I have watched my mom, a single mom, going back to school, working double shifts, sleepless nights studying, and borrowing money to pay our rent just to make sure my brothers and I were comfortable enough. She hated the idea of consenting us to work during the school year because she wanted my siblings and me to focus in school and bring home good…

It was in the late 1980’s that the first of my family immigrated to America. Like most immigrants, they came to this country in search of a better life than the one they left behind. I admire my parents for having the courage to come to this country and start over from zero. For most of their lives, my parents worked in the fields picking fruit. It is a physically demanding job that pays very little.…

I was born in Mexico in 1996 and when I was just 11 months old my parents decided to immigrate to the United States to try and give me and my brother a better life. When I was younger I never questioned why I’d have to wake up at 4 in the morning to go to my babysitter’s house; it wasn’t until I was around 5 years old that I realized my mom, brother, and me were all living in this country illegally, my dad was the only one who was a legal resident. My mom and dad worked long hours in the Florida orange groves to be able to provide a better life for me and my brother; despite the bad conditions they worked in they were never discouraged because they knew that in the end any sacrifices made would be worth it if it meant a better future for us.…

My heritage is one of mixed roots as many American families now are. The family gene pool is pulled from a variety of different ethnicities including Choctaw Indian, Irish and German. When America was formed the Irish were viewed as lower class and poor and this limited the work they were permitted to perform. My great, great, grandfather, who was Irish and German, married a Choctaw Indian lady when he was only 22 years old and has been in the country for only a short amount of time. The marriage permitted him to build his home on the Indian reservation in Tulsa, Oklahoma.…

My parents are Mexican immigrants with a long history of hardships before and after their migration to the U.S. Through their experiences, I learned that my ancestors and relatives are people that had a hard time finding motivation in moving forward when stuck in a dilemma. My parents, however, proved to be the relatives within their families to fight for what they believe and what they think they deserve. My grandparents and great grandparents were always struggling to fight poverty, and with little resources, it was not easy finding light at the end of the tunnel. My parents have shared the stories of their obstacles and how it affected their family unity and overall health. With this in mind and college awaiting right around the corner, it motivates me to always strive for my dreams and help others who are in need of a hand.…

Growing up I often faced with the words “ you need an education in order to be something good in life “ but to much of my surprise that was not necessarily true. For much of my childhood I was apart from my Dad due to distance but at age three that all changed. I remember coming into the United States for the first times and arriving at a place with the weather much like Mexico's, it was very warm, dry, and full of open land. I often questioned why my Dad lived so far away from my mom, sister and I but as the years have gone by I have come to the understanding as to why my Dad moved to the United States. At age eighteen my dad came to the U.S. to work because the U.S offered better opportunities than Mexico and he wanted to make sure he gave us the best.…

Class Analysis Throughout my 19 years of life I’ve lived a great life. I have a great house to live in, a family that loves me unconditionally, abundance amounts of clothing, food has never been an issue, I’ve gotten pretty much everything I have ever wanted in life and I’m beyond blessed because of it. I’ve never had to struggle with what I’m going to eat the next day, or where I’m going to live next, and I think I’ve taken those aspects of my life for granted because not everyone is as grateful as I have been. It never really crossed my mind either, I’ve seen people on the streets, and I have heard of people going to a third world country to help those in need, but it never seemed like it affected my life in any way.…
