There once was this young man who at the age of 18, thought that he was able to figure everything out in life and was capable of doing everything. He thought to himself, “ I have a very good life, I have a great job, I have my family to support me, and I’m doing great in school. There should be nothing to worry about and I am happy.” However, one week is all that it took to change that sense of thinking. While his family is helping and supporting him, school and work had a very drastic change and disrupted his entire way of thinking. Living a life is not a simple thing to do. When living, a person must submerge himself or herself entirely into the life he or she lives. He or she must indulge in all aspects of life, and unquestionably look beyond what is only apparent of him or her. Many people make the mistake of simply focusing on their own lives, while neglecting the reality that boisterously roars around them. Being locked in one’s own mind is a dangerous catastrophe.…

Scott had given me writing assignments and I wasn’t trying that hard and winging them. I felt guilty slacking off. He was a really good music teacher and had done so much for me. The thing is I just didn’t have any inspiration. My days were all the same, just repeating the motions, life was very vanilla.…

As a military child, I left the United States with my family at the age of five and spent eight years living overseas at duty stations in Japan, Germany, and Italy. We traveled extensively during vacations to over 20 different countries. As a result, I claim proficiency in ordering french fries and apple juice in several different languages. Although moving has brought me some misfortune, and many people would say that living overseas qualifies as adversity, I never felt it was such.…

In many ways, individuals often struggle against their fears. The time I experienced this was when I used to ride steers a couple summers ago. It was a hot July day and my dad and I had just finished helping my Rodeo queen sister get ready for carrying flags to start off the rodeo. After when we walked over to the stands to get ready for their riding, I was gearing up to ride one of those beasts they call steers, thinking I was going to get killed.…

Technology has developed so much over the years that we have relied on it so much. Technology is used in pretty much everything we use nowadays. Living in a neighborhood was the greatest advantage, but having kids the same age as I was even better. There was never a time we weren't outside: rain, shine, snow, miserably cold, or even scorchingly hot. There was 4 of us: 3 girls and 1 guy, all around the same age.…

Over the duration of my senior summer I was allowed to experience many wonders as I transitioned out of one segment of my life to a new one; however, possibly to greatest experience out of the entire time period of my summer was my family's trip to six flags. We began planning for the trip months in advance saving money, gathering supplies, and making reservations. We toiled through this segment of planing making sure that all of the details of the trip would be perfect. Once all of our details were lined up ducks in a row and bags packed as if we were to stay for a month, we began travel on the an interstate that was as busy as an ant nest just before winter, as in when they begin to store food, but I digress we weaved through the traffic,…

She had busted her nose and hit her head on the cabinets behind her rendering herself unconscious.…

I have been through so many experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. However, there is one experience in particular that moved me in ways I can hardly put into words. My freshman year of high school, I was given the opportunity to join the Klondike FFA Milk Quality Career Development Event team. Studying and competing in this event led me to develop a fighting hunger for winning. Halfway through my first year, I realized that I did not like to lose.…

It seems the older you get the more privileges you get and the more freedom you can have to do almost whatever you want. I remember when I was in elementary school my first day of third grade, it was the day I had waited for since my first day in elementary school. Every year prior to that we had recess on the boring playground meant for the little kids. The playground had a slide smaller than a wheelchair ramp going into a building. It only had two swings that were so low to the ground you could not even do an underdog.…

When I wrote this essay I was in my new home, my door room. I often refer to my dorm as my house, which my friends despise but I do it anyways. I always say “Want to come over to my house?”. Writing this essay in my new house allowed me to reflect back to my old house in Rotterdam. The physical setting that I was in made me feel extremely nostalgic for my old room at home that I shared with my little sister.…

In his book As a Man Thinketh, James Allen has a running theme which is the power of the mind. To start off his book, Allen discusses the power of the mind to shape one’s thoughts, character, circumstances, health, and one’s purpose in life. Then Allen transitions into discussing how one should strive for achievement; how one should chase after his own visions and dreams; and at last how one should strive for a calm mind. I will be discussing all of this and I shall relate Allen’s ideas to my own life experience and my internship at Grand Lake Mental Health Intensive Out-Patient Center in Vinita, Oklahoma.…

I vividly remember the first day of sixth grade; I looked at my schedule just “knowing” I would switch out of the “Odyssey of the Mind” class, especially since I had never even heard of it before. I had no idea that exactly two years later I would be the one standing in the middle of the Iowa University stadium, performing in front of hundreds of other passionate competitors from over a hundred countries around the world. I have always been good at painting, drawing, and coming up with witty answers to teacher's questions. However, only a few other students understood what I was saying. I was never able to put my creative skills to good use, besides the rare once-a-quarter projects we would have.…

This too shall pass. I’ve been hurt many times, and so have you. As growing adolescents we played freely throughout the simplicity of our lives, skinning knees and bruising elbows, only for our wounds to heal. As our metaphoric birthday cakes gained candles, we learned that friendships have an expiration date, and so did our extended family member’s lives. Through it all we healed, or coped, and the sadness passed.…

Sometimes we do not feel that anything can happen to us. We feel untouchable. We look at someone we may or may not know going through something and we feel sorry for them, but deep down we are glad that it is not us that has to deal with that situation or that issue. We may even tread through life without giving a second thought to the consequences. I use to think this way too, until life taught me differently.…
