I vividly remember the first day of sixth grade; I looked at my schedule just “knowing” I would switch out of the “Odyssey of the Mind” class, especially since I had never even heard of it before. I had no idea that exactly two years later I would be the one standing in the middle of the Iowa University stadium, performing in front of hundreds of other passionate competitors from over a hundred countries around the world. I have always been good at painting, drawing, and coming up with witty answers to teacher's questions. However, only a few other students understood what I was saying. I was never able to put my creative skills to good use, besides the rare once-a-quarter projects we would have. I was often the odd-one-out because of my …show more content…
However, painting, writing, and costume-making were not the only things I had to do creatively. I also had to train myself to come up with innovative responses and techniques in a time constraint to successfully participate and complete a major part of the competition: spontaneous. Through my creative training for both long-term and spontaneous problems, I have learned how to apply my strengths in the most efficient ways. Prior to sixth grade, I found it very difficult to work with others without ending up taking the burden of the entire project and complete it myself. Through Odyssey of the Mind, I learned that it is impossible to complete a given task alone; it is necessary to work with others to reach the full potential. Towards the beginning of the first year of competition, I found it very difficult to adjust to my team. We often had arguments over little things, such as what shade of blue the sky should be. Gradually, however, we put our differences to the side and bonded during our journey to states for the second time. The most important and memorable experience for our team was when we found out that we, in fact, did make it to States in 7th grade several weeks after the regional

Gone thinking! To promote freer, more creative thinking, I will need to include time to observe and appreciate creativity. In class and in my journal I described television shows that highlighted some very talented and creative people. While television can be a good source of creative inspiration, once each month I will schedule an opportunity to study creativity related to art, science, business, commerce, family or any other source I discover. While family may seem an unusual source for creative inspiration, this course prompted me to notice my son’s creativity.…

Creativity, an essential skill that can simultaneously help advance the world and communicate different perceptions of an idea, has gradually declined since 1990. Original ideas are vital when it comes to problem solving, technological advancements, communication, and much more. In order to boost creativity in the population, it is best to start at the foundation of all skills, school. About four years ago I was playing club lacrosse for the Villanova Wildcats travel team. I was about thirteen years old when I experienced one of my first significant lessons of failure. At a young age many do not understand the importance of failures and short comings, and how it is essential to learn, grow, and improve. We think success comes easy and without trial which is not realistic. My life changing failure taught me many things: the strength of teamwork, the power of preparation and will, and how to be a better competitor.…

Over the duration of my senior summer I was allowed to experience many wonders as I transitioned out of one segment of my life to a new one; however, possibly to greatest experience out of the entire time period of my summer was my family's trip to six flags. We began planning for the trip months in advance saving money, gathering supplies, and making reservations. We toiled through this segment of planing making sure that all of the details of the trip would be perfect. Once all of our details were lined up ducks in a row and bags packed as if we were to stay for a month, we began travel on the an interstate that was as busy as an ant nest just before winter, as in when they begin to store food, but I digress we weaved through the traffic,…

Even within Math and Science, creativity is required in order to grow and move forward. New ideas have to be created for the world to evolve, but with the stifling of creativity, and the creation of a school system where making mistakes can cost students grades, college admissions, and ultimately their future, putting new ideas out into the open can be intimidating. This renders the education system counterproductive and creates leaders and innovators who succeed despite the structure of their education system instead of because of it. Creativity is a defining trait of civilization and should not be…

Hence, good teachers prepare their students for the real world giving them lifelong skills that…

Before discovering my own individuality, I think the word “creative” intimidated me. The word didn’t seem to apply to me in the slightest. To me, creativity implied concrete artistic genius. Because I was not a gifted painter, singer, actress, or musician, I thought I couldn’t be creative. Although my imagination is very original and always sprawling with new ideas, it took me a while to explore it.…

In conclusion, creativity is one of the most important qualities that humans possess, yet it is sometimes undermined in today’s school system. Some people are naturally more “imaginative” than others and that is why teacher collaboration with creative professionals is often key to encouraging and nourishing a healthy and creative classroom atmosphere. When students are pushed to think outside the box, they will continue to do so outside the classroom. This “domino effect” leads to personal growth, and creative problem solving in real world scenarios, which is a desirable trait in the business and economic…

All the time I never thought that I was a creative person although I was a good student in my teacher’s eye since my childhood. I studied hard and followed every step that my teacher told me to take, but I still felt that I was not the person who I wanted to be. I wanted to be a person who was not only good at study but also a creative person; however, I always lacked confidence to say that because I had never come up with a creative idea before. Later until I knew the story of Bill Gates created the Microsoft system, he has become the idol of me and I was determined to become a creative person and created something that could make change happen.…

School kills creativity As Pablo Picasso said, “every child is an artist the problem is staying an artist when you grow up”. The question therefore is “why is staying an artist difficult”. Sir Ken Robinson, a British education and creativity expert, speaker, and a New York Times bestselling author gave, the example of a study that does research to that answer (The RSA., 2010). George Land who conducted the study asked: “how many uses can you think of for a paperclip”. Divergent thinkers will list hundred answers to that question while most people list 15 or less.…
