Personal Narrative Analysis

Even though the two paragraphs the author writes differ in communication, both had one clear point - attempting to change the North Carolina education system. The purpose of this essay is to examine the effectiveness of using informal or formal writing when communicating to two different audiences, a close friend and a respected senator. The writer effectively uses her critical literacy skills to understand the audience’s need for informal or formal writing, and use descriptive language to fit the social codes required for each audience. In order to communicate effectively, the writer efficiently shifts social codes in order to interact in the best possible way to one’s audience. In the first email to the writer’s close friend, the author writes, “OMG, Em, my stomach has been in a tight ball all of today. My head has been a flurry of stress and pressure,” In the first two lines of the message, the writer conveys her intense level of nervousness without having to simply tell her friend, Emily, that she is nervous. In the following email sent to Senator Tillis, the author of the email paints the cold, harsh testing system through descriptive words; therefore, the writer is allowing the senator to actually envision inside the classrooms on testing day.
