“I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring” -David Bowie. Before experiencing Junior year, I did not know what I was to expect, but I did know it was going to be one of the most overwhelming and stressful years of my life. Now, having endured through the stress myself, I can definitely say I am not the same person I was the start of September of 2016. Treading through the challenging demands of this year, alongside the troubles of my mental health, has shaped me into a more independent person who is unaware what the future holds but takes responsibility for the tasks I am given. This year was a year of pushing my limits. Academically, I can say I pushed myself more than I had in my previous years at Godinez. Taking

I didn’t study much, thinking that it wouldn’t affect my grades considerably, but I was wrong. However, at the same time, I had developed as a student and as an individual. Throughout the year, I have developed as a communicator from the socratic seminar, a creative and critical thinker by making the clay whistles in art, and as a collaborator from my March Madness project in history.…

As a military child, I left the United States with my family at the age of five and spent eight years living overseas at duty stations in Japan, Germany, and Italy. We traveled extensively during vacations to over 20 different countries. As a result, I claim proficiency in ordering french fries and apple juice in several different languages. Although moving has brought me some misfortune, and many people would say that living overseas qualifies as adversity, I never felt it was such.…

I have been through so many experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. However, there is one experience in particular that moved me in ways I can hardly put into words. My freshman year of high school, I was given the opportunity to join the Klondike FFA Milk Quality Career Development Event team. Studying and competing in this event led me to develop a fighting hunger for winning. Halfway through my first year, I realized that I did not like to lose.…

One particular circumstance that sparked the idea of attending college made me open my eyes at a young age to realize a higher education is important to succeed in the world. It started when I was talking with my parents about their choices and thoughts in high school, specifically, my mother. She was a straight A student throughout high school and when senior year came around, she applied to many colleges. One of the few was Cal State Fullerton.…

The most difficult challenge I had ever faced was overcoming my suicidal thoughts and attempts before it was too late. During my Junior year at Magnolia Highschool, I struggled keeping my sanity in control. Fighting against the conflicting natures of my Samoan cultural traditions, family expectations, religious beliefs, and school standards, causing me to lower my self-esteem and motivation. Currently during this time I was helping support my parents who were living homeless outside on the streets while dealing with the possiblity that I would never seeing my older brother again except behind a glass window. Because of these events I began distancing myself from my family, doing poorly at school, loosing faith in my beliefs, and eventually…

She woke up the way no one wants to: alone, afraid, and not particularly sure of her whereabouts. While panicking seemed to be the most enjoyable action for someone in this scenario, she decided that logic would be the most effective way to cope. As her eyes adjusted to the dim morning light she was able to tell that she was sitting on a bed in a rural shack. Around her were very few items, a dresser on the opposite wall, a nightstand next to the bed, and a dusty and rotting wood chair. The walls were wood, as well as the ceiling and floor, but they were stripped and peeling, worn down by years of water damage and termite infestations.…

In my childhood, I went to Nerd Camp at Northwestern during the summer. While I was there, I fell in love with Northwestern’s environment, especially the city of Evanston. I knew that I wanted to apply there in the future. Of course, a few three-week long stays at Northwestern wasn’t enough for me to learn what being an undergraduate student there is like, but during my transition from Nerd Camp Student to High School Student, and now to College Student, I’ve also realized the academic benefits Northwestern offers.…

This week I have been focusing on technique. My mentor said that was one of the most important things, when learning how to play the guitar. He said, since my fingers hadn’t learned the difference yet that I might as well learn how to do it the correct way. This is because as I continue it will be easier to play, and will in the end, sound better. He always says that anybody can pick-up a guitar and learn how to play, but to become a musician it takes practice and dedication.…

Days on end of constant pacing, hard work, and unnecessary social interaction. That’s pretty much what I see school as being in a majority of the time, but luckily, every year we get a 2 week vacation. Those are practically blessings for students and I’m sure teachers too. I never do anything but still, it’s a nice time to work on whatever I don’t have time to during school. I have a fairly packed schedule during the school year, so the 2 weeks are a nice time to catch up on sleep and T.V. shows.…

From a very young age my parents have always told me that education was the way to a better life. This hackneyed comment was always there whenever we finished cleaning a medical center, a salon or took a break from mowing lawns in Florida’s relentless summer heat. Starting out in the United States was tough for my family; we did menial jobs for little pay just to make it through the week. When my parents finally found decent jobs the country was met by an economic crisis and they were both laid off. Eventually after months of desperation we moved to West Pam Beach in search for work.…

I don’t remember it that well, but my parents divorced when I was around three years old. I vaguely remember my father getting on a plane at the airport to go back to Guam and my mom, brother, and I waving good-bye. I have heard stories about why they split, saying that it had nothing to do with my brother or I, just differences between the two. As I grew older, I would still get presents in the mail on my birthday, Christmas, and even Halloween. He would send mangos from Guam, pictures of him fishing and even working (as a firefighter).…
