Picking up my phone I texted my friend Elli to see if she could get anyone to play night games at the Mapleton City Park. Earlier that day at school we had began planning on having night games, and the park was a central place to have them. Even with both of us trying we couldn’t get anyone who could come play. Only one person said that they would be there, who just happened to be the boy I had a major crush on.
Planning out what to say to my dad, and imagining how he would respond I covered all the possibilities of the conversation. I knew from previous times, I had asked to go out, that he would want to know four

Some thought I was too small, other thought I didn’t have the stick skills, but most players thought I was just too young. These issues were made no secret to me. For my entire eighth grade season I felt left out, beaten down, and exhausted. My 8th grade season consisted of team hangouts; not including me, posters with everyone's name on it; not including me, and after every practice, me waiting to get picked up from 4-6 because no one offered me a ride home; strictly me. These girls I had looked to as potential friends had become the reason I dreaded going to hockey.…

As I sat in the kitchen, I had to make a big decision for an 9 year old. I didn’t know weather I should play baseball or not. I wasn’t having any fun when I did play, and I needed to do something. I had been talking to my dad about not playing, and he said it was up to me. All of my friends had moved to a different team that year, and I didn’t want to play with a bunch of people that I didn’t know.…

There is a certain type of dedication that a 13 year old girl has for a band full of cute boys that she wants to marry. The excitement only builds when the concert is announced, and finalized when a white t-shirt is decorated with the last name of the cutest member written on the back like a jersey. April 11th 2014, the date circled in the Glee Calendar was fast approaching; in fact, the story starts the very afternoon before the concert. Churchill P.E class, the least athletic but surprisingly competitive place, causes the initial hiccup. Ultimate Frisbee does not seem like a deadly game; however, in this case it almost was.…

In many ways, individuals often struggle against their fears. The time I experienced this was when I used to ride steers a couple summers ago. It was a hot July day and my dad and I had just finished helping my Rodeo queen sister get ready for carrying flags to start off the rodeo. After when we walked over to the stands to get ready for their riding, I was gearing up to ride one of those beasts they call steers, thinking I was going to get killed.…

Technology has developed so much over the years that we have relied on it so much. Technology is used in pretty much everything we use nowadays. Living in a neighborhood was the greatest advantage, but having kids the same age as I was even better. There was never a time we weren't outside: rain, shine, snow, miserably cold, or even scorchingly hot. There was 4 of us: 3 girls and 1 guy, all around the same age.…

Using natural language to communicate is, for the vast majority of us, something we do every day from a very young age. That said, when we look closely, communication is not without its fair share of hurdles. Indeed, is a fact of human social intercourse that individuals do not always say what they mean, or mean what they say in conversational contexts. In this paper, we will expound upon the issue of implicatures present in human communication, as described by Grice. In addition, we will present two related theories which attempt to elucidate how human beings are able to grasp what others mean with seemingly little effort.…

I have been through so many experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. However, there is one experience in particular that moved me in ways I can hardly put into words. My freshman year of high school, I was given the opportunity to join the Klondike FFA Milk Quality Career Development Event team. Studying and competing in this event led me to develop a fighting hunger for winning. Halfway through my first year, I realized that I did not like to lose.…

The trips were unplanned, as I have traveled to 13 different countries in four continents of the world. At least that was something to brag about after returning home from six years of military service. I would talk about these moments in a heartbeat when topics related to travel surface in conversations. Remembering and reliving those moments brings great fulfillment. Usually, there's a moment in life where I experience home in places I've visited.…

During my senior year of High School, I have dealt with a negative educational experience that has changed my life to this day. In the month of November of 2014, I was waiting for an acceptance letter from Stockton University hopefully to obtain a career in Occupational Therapy. Throughout High School I became an excellent student having a 3.9 GPA, attending various amounts of community service, and was a varsity player for lacrosse and cheerleading. When I wrote this essay I was in my new home, my door room. I often refer to my dorm as my house, which my friends despise but I do it anyways. I always say “Want to come over to my house?”. Writing this essay in my new house allowed me to reflect back to my old house in Rotterdam. The physical setting that I was in made me feel extremely nostalgic for my old room at home that I shared with my little sister.…

Days on end of constant pacing, hard work, and unnecessary social interaction. That’s pretty much what I see school as being in a majority of the time, but luckily, every year we get a 2 week vacation. Those are practically blessings for students and I’m sure teachers too. I never do anything but still, it’s a nice time to work on whatever I don’t have time to during school. I have a fairly packed schedule during the school year, so the 2 weeks are a nice time to catch up on sleep and T.V. shows.…

The first time I had a phone I was in elementary school, and had it for about 2 years. Then as life moved on, and events took place, I was not allowed to have one, and did not have one for almost two years. When I was in fourth or fifth grade I was allowed to have another one and kept it until the sixth grade. My dog had torn it apart, and because of financial reasons, there was only one phone in the house, between three people, and it was a old slide up phone. Not a touch screen…

I still have nightmares about the week when I didn’t have a phone. In my senior year of highschool, my phone got stolen and it took about a week to get a replacement. That week was the longest week of my life. I found myself actually feeling sad and depressed without my phone, which is quite pathetic. When I would go out with friends, I realized just how much of our “hanging out” time actually consisted of us sitting in the same place, but in different worlds.…
