I had most of the same classmates year after year, and the same outdoor school campus and teachers. With the exception of a few students who came and went, most of us were together through eighth grade. In those nine years, I made friends with these classmates and had a small school experience. We spent time playing in the creeks and using the many outdoor classrooms. So when my class of 13 graduated eighth grade, we had to move on to a bigger and different school. Moving schools away from all of my friends should’ve been an appalling experience, surprisingly, it was a blessing in disguise. I went to Agnes Baptist Elementary from kindergarten to 5th grade and I had friends that I've known since I was 3. I loved it there and knew the school like the back of my hand. Everything was superior, like most good things, though there were times where they weren’t, I was harassed by a bully almost everyday, my grades were getting inadequate, and my mom didn’t want me to be a sad, disconsolate 7th grader at a new junior high. In the result, I moved and I went to Savage Middle School, a school that had 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.…

I never thought I could feel so much happiness than when I knew I was impacting a child life for the better. I would rush home from school, change into my work uniform, and soak up as much sun as I possibly could knowing I wouldn’t see or feel its warmth for the rest of the day. My bleak attitude during depressing winter days completely revolved once I stepped into my classroom; every day thirteen chubby two-year old would run to me exclaiming how they missed me and how their scribbled drawings were just for me. Their parents saw my commitment and regularly told me stories about how their little one now knew the words “spectacular” and “illuminating” or they used the bathroom all by themselves singing the potty song I had made up the day before.…

“Different… very different.” These were my mother’s words when I held up my first artwork with a big smile full of baby teeth. That piece was a watercolor painting of an unrealistic ocean. There was a blue and orange striped shark as the main component, rainbow jellyfish crowded in the bottom corner, and air bubbles shaped like musical notes at the top. With her face aghast staring at my masterpiece, I comprehended that to her the concept of my illustration seemed peculiar and the craftsmanship mediocre.…

On a blistering cold Saturday morning in November, my parents and I traveled north to see the 150th meeting between Lehigh and Lafayette at Yankee Stadium. My sister, a Lehigh freshman at the time and already in The Big Apple for the weekend, was texting pictures of the excitement. The NYSE, the Empire State Building, and the subway crowds all sporting brown and white. How could this small university from Bethlehem capture the attention of the greatest city in the world? Then it hit me… it was all about tradition.…
