I was traveling with Catherine, Jingbo, Coco, and Coco’s mom—people I had only met the week before; Dongzhou, Randing, and Luosang were our guides. Initially, our sole intention was to spread environmental awareness to the Yushu area. However, during our tree-hugging mission, we were also able to observe the local culture and lifestyle, and somewhere along the line, the strangers I explored Yushu with became my friends.

The vehicle encountered every bump in the road as we drove into the mountains. I was half asleep, having woken up at five in the morning during summer vacation, and was battling the low pressure and oxygen levels. A monstrous force was building between my eyes, and my resting heart rate was a racing 108 beats per minute.

Over the past several summers, I have galvanized my sense of adventure and my love for traveling. I had the opportunity to travel with the Kenston Field Experience to several national parks in the western United States to study geology up close. I also traveled internationally with the Chinese Bridge Summer Camp to Beijing and Ningbo. This life-changing experience was so particularly rewarding because of the interactions I had with the local Chinese students I met. We taught each other’s languages and cultures to one another, and by time I left China I had gained a new perspective on how culture can shape an individual’s lifestyle.…

As a military child, I left the United States with my family at the age of five and spent eight years living overseas at duty stations in Japan, Germany, and Italy. We traveled extensively during vacations to over 20 different countries. As a result, I claim proficiency in ordering french fries and apple juice in several different languages. Although moving has brought me some misfortune, and many people would say that living overseas qualifies as adversity, I never felt it was such.…

Staring up at faces that looked as if they were distorted by funhouse mirrors. Once my vision restored itself, I saw the blue walls and breathed in the potent smell of sterile medical equipment. My doctor came in and told me what had happened. I had passed out in the last 20 meters of my race. He assured me that they did all the tests they could, but found nothing wrong with me except an unexplainably high blood sugar of 359.…

The clothes they wore, their education, the way they interacted with men, and most of their habits were all different from the farmers’ – “… they were altogether peculiar, unlike countryfolk” (CP 249/107). However, as we read through the story, we will be able to see that what was deemed as a strange behavior by the Chinese community in the past, is something that we consider normal…

Beginning junior year, I occupied myself with the most constructive investment in my life. My daily routine was bland, but oddly hailed as the ultimate path to victory. I was learning in school, but the learning lacked meaning. Plot lines and mathematical formulas were unavailing ideas, which I tepidly regurgitated. I concluded that a life permeated with monotonous toil was not worth celebrating on my day of judgment.…

However, it is not often that when you return from a vacation you learn even more about yourself. We visited two major cities in China, Beijing and Shanghai, both absolutely amazing cities and if you ever get the chance to visit, it is a must. As expected, we enjoyed the recommended tourist attractions and truly enjoyed all that those cities had to offer. The life changing moments materialized in a small mountain range in the Northwestern part Hubei, China, called the Wundang Mountains at the Shaolin Monastery. Yes, the ‘middle of nowhere’ had the greatest influence on…

Technology has developed so much over the years that we have relied on it so much. Technology is used in pretty much everything we use nowadays. Living in a neighborhood was the greatest advantage, but having kids the same age as I was even better. There was never a time we weren't outside: rain, shine, snow, miserably cold, or even scorchingly hot. There was 4 of us: 3 girls and 1 guy, all around the same age.…

I have been through so many experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. However, there is one experience in particular that moved me in ways I can hardly put into words. When I was born, per my father, whenever you would talk to me, I wouldn’t show any reaction towards you. The only time I would ever react is when my mother was screaming about something and I would look around the room for the sound. In third grade, I would always get in trouble, perhaps because I didn’t listen when I was supposed to. This changed as soon as I got my hearing aids. I remember the molding of the hearing aid being stuck into ears, which felt like there was cold water in my ears.…

The physical setting that I was in made me feel extremely nostalgic for my old room at home that I shared with my little sister.…

I can recall the beginning of my college exploration during my freshman year of high school. Straight out of middle school, college sounded like a crazy idea that only existed in dreams. My guidance counselor at the time was so enthusiastic for us to go to college. She was spewing out so much information to me I was overwhelmed. As a first generation college student, this all was something very foreign to me and my family— but I was intrigued by it.…
