From homeschool on a farm to the diverse public high school hallways – talk about a culture shock! After that first day of school, every glance in the mirror told me a dozen things about myself that had never crossed my mind before. I did not fit in. Fear and insecurity developed into a confidence-deficient mindset that lasted through the majority of my junior year. During this time, I lacked faith in my abilities both academically and athletically because I failed to see myself for who I am rather than who I am not. Over time, I realized that it is counterproductive to compare myself to others; I must strive to be the best I can be, not the best that others can be. I like to think of this realization as one of the most momentous turning points in my life thus far, a transition from childhood to adulthood. …show more content…
Due to a tough loss at the wrestling state championships that year and due to vision issues that were limiting my ability to keep up with my classmates in school, I became frustrated with myself and deeply depressed. Fortunately, I was surrounded with wise parents and supportive coaches who helped me discover that many of these problems were caused by a warped self-view. I was obsessing with what others were capable of doing, which was keeping me from seeing my own strengths and from performing to the best of my abilities. I have since learned how to combat this thought process by working to better myself in all areas instead of working to achieve an arbitrary goal set by someone

I didn’t not know what I was expecting. On the first day of high school, I stepped into a crowd of students, waiting to enter the building that would become my second home for the next four years. I didn’ not know where I would stand among these highly accomplished individuals, or if I would even amount to the standards set before me. Self-doubt began to fester inside of me as soon as I stepped through the front doors. I expected less and less of myself as time went on.…

In many ways, individuals often struggle against their fears. The time I experienced this was when I used to ride steers a couple summers ago. It was a hot July day and my dad and I had just finished helping my Rodeo queen sister get ready for carrying flags to start off the rodeo. After when we walked over to the stands to get ready for their riding, I was gearing up to ride one of those beasts they call steers, thinking I was going to get killed.…

Technology has developed so much over the years that we have relied on it so much. Technology is used in pretty much everything we use nowadays. Living in a neighborhood was the greatest advantage, but having kids the same age as I was even better. There was never a time we weren't outside: rain, shine, snow, miserably cold, or even scorchingly hot. There was 4 of us: 3 girls and 1 guy, all around the same age.…

“Mia can you go walk A field and the corral?” my supervisor asked over the walkie-talkie as I finished bringing in fifteen excited dogs from group play. By this point I had already walked more than a dozen dogs, fed half the kennel, and taken out over a hundred dogs for one of their daily outings. I was exhausted and now I had to pick up a field full of dog feces.…

I was born into an already developed family. My mother had me when she was pushing the age of 43, and my dad was 40. They had been married for over 20 years, and they had spent the last seven with their first born, my brother, Lucas. So there I was thrown into a family who had already bonded, already made those “first time” connections, and they had expected to stay the parents of one child until—surprise! A little girl was born, and their three man wolf pack became four.…

I have been through so many experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. However, there is one experience in particular that moved me in ways I can hardly put into words. My freshman year of high school, I was given the opportunity to join the Klondike FFA Milk Quality Career Development Event team. Studying and competing in this event led me to develop a fighting hunger for winning. Halfway through my first year, I realized that I did not like to lose.…

Journalist: Why do you think people come here? Joey: When people think of the local music store, they think of the past. Our society has moved so much towards an online presence to where people click buttons and have stuff delivered to them. I think that the average customer has a yearning to participate in a local community, a store that is somewhat connected to the arts.…

Slaves to batteries and power outlets; we have entered the new America. Energy, power, electricity all impose the same idea for us in today's world. We are in an ever ending loop of searching for a source of power that is both efficient and clean. As a child, the thoughts of how electricity powers everything from a toaster to our own brain sparked my interest in electrical engineering. The thoughts of creating light from a potato is unfathomable.…

I am the second youngest of 5 children born to the 13ers generation. My father was born in Mexico, while my mother lived her life in the United States. My parents crossed paths unexpectedly and gave birth to a new generation. I lived my early years in a house that exceeded its capacity; 7 squeezed into 2 rooms,1 bathroom, and a basement. My grandparents watched over my siblings and I as our parents went to work while still managing jobs of their own.…

The first time I had a phone I was in elementary school, and had it for about 2 years. Then as life moved on, and events took place, I was not allowed to have one, and did not have one for almost two years. When I was in fourth or fifth grade I was allowed to have another one and kept it until the sixth grade. My dog had torn it apart, and because of financial reasons, there was only one phone in the house, between three people, and it was a old slide up phone. Not a touch screen…

In 17 years I’ve experienced many challenges and struggles. I’ve had health scares, friends of mine have died, people I know have tried to seriously injure or hurt me, and sometimes things just didn’t work out in my favor. Bad things happen to everyone, and in my case it wasn’t the events that were the challenge, but how I dealt with them. Looking back, I wasn’t dealing with the those situations in a healthy way. In fact, the biggest barrier in my own happiness, success, and wellbeing has always been myself.…

I can recall the beginning of my college exploration during my freshman year of high school. Straight out of middle school, college sounded like a crazy idea that only existed in dreams. My guidance counselor at the time was so enthusiastic for us to go to college. She was spewing out so much information to me I was overwhelmed. As a first generation college student, this all was something very foreign to me and my family— but I was intrigued by it.…

The first thing that comes to mind when I remind myself of faith when i’m feeling down, is going to church. If I personally got asked the question about where I consider my parents to be in the spectrum of hyper, my first initial thought would be to put them pretty high on the spectrum. The reasoning for this initial response is because I always remember ever since I was little my parents pushing me academically and being there for me. I think they started to become more hyper after I got lost in South Korea and my parents ended up having to contact the police to find me. I’m sure that must have been a terrifying moment for my parents as losing a child is one of the worst things that could happen to a parent. I can relate to the video we watched, as when the mother was considering putting a microchip inside her daughter to track her, to a regular…
