It was the first day of seventh grade. I was young for my class, a seven-year home school veteran, and going into a small, private school where I would be in a class of only seven people who had already known each other for years. This was a recipe for disaster and I could feel the terror and nervousness taking over me as I walked into the classroom, five minutes late. Five minutes may not seem like much, but in five minutes I could have found a better desk to sit at or at least have had time to introduce myself to a few of my new classmates. Instead, I walked in -not even aware that I was late- to awkwardly stand there, in front of everyone, until the teacher helped me find a desk to sit at. Bright and early in the morning I had to arrive at the school for my first monthly meeting. When first walking into the classroom, my initial reaction wasn't the best. There were very few familiar faces. I had limited friends in the room and the first thing to pop in my head was "who in this room am I going to volunteer with". I was…

It was my first day of 7th grade, I looked down at my schedule; full of unfamiliar names. My first class was “Mrs.Pettyjohn”, for english. When I finally found her room she welcomed me in and told me to sit wherever I would like too. I found my seat, next to a few friends and we began to talk until Mrs.Pettyjohn blurts out, “WELCOME TO 7th GRADE!” Everyone jumped up and looked at our teacher.…

In many ways, individuals often struggle against their fears. The time I experienced this was when I used to ride steers a couple summers ago. It was a hot July day and my dad and I had just finished helping my Rodeo queen sister get ready for carrying flags to start off the rodeo. After when we walked over to the stands to get ready for their riding, I was gearing up to ride one of those beasts they call steers, thinking I was going to get killed.…

Technology has developed so much over the years that we have relied on it so much. Technology is used in pretty much everything we use nowadays. Living in a neighborhood was the greatest advantage, but having kids the same age as I was even better. There was never a time we weren't outside: rain, shine, snow, miserably cold, or even scorchingly hot. There was 4 of us: 3 girls and 1 guy, all around the same age.…

“Mia can you go walk A field and the corral?” my supervisor asked over the walkie-talkie as I finished bringing in fifteen excited dogs from group play. By this point I had already walked more than a dozen dogs, fed half the kennel, and taken out over a hundred dogs for one of their daily outings. I was exhausted and now I had to pick up a field full of dog feces.…

There are not many memories I can recall of my childhood, and of the memories I recall, one stands alone as being the most profound. I was nearly five years old when my mother became pregnant, she told me I was going to be a sister. With three brothers the idea of a sister was exciting enough to fantasize about. The next memory of my mother's pregnancy was the night my brothers and I were in the living room and my parents were arguing in the back bedroom. The anger was frightening and we children would look at each other with questioning eyes.…

The first time I had a phone I was in elementary school, and had it for about 2 years. Then as life moved on, and events took place, I was not allowed to have one, and did not have one for almost two years. When I was in fourth or fifth grade I was allowed to have another one and kept it until the sixth grade. My dog had torn it apart, and because of financial reasons, there was only one phone in the house, between three people, and it was a old slide up phone. Not a touch screen…

Events have the capability to shape a person as a whole, depending on the level of the importance or the impacts after the event. Being this age, it is such a strange yet not the best time in life, but it is also the transition from childhood to adulthood. The event I endured shaped me as a person, it caused so much mental and emotional destruction. But, it also was a transition for the good.…

One of my main goals is to pursue a career as a prestigious lawyer, fighting injustices throughout not only our Nation but the world as well, helping those in need, and one day I hope to accomplish that goal. Throughout life many children are faced with questions surfacing around what they hope to be in the future. At a very young age I had discovered that one day I would want to become a very successful lawyer, however, it wasn’t until my first year of college that I decided that I wanted my career to be focused on helping those who were wrongly convicted and in desperate need of a hand of help. In the fall semester of 2017, I’ve had the privilege of attending a convocation in which Bryan Stevenson spoke about his career journey into becoming…

For the first time I confronted fear of death was when I was thirteen years old. I was a middle school student in Korea back then. When I unconsciously looked at front, I saw my friend cutting herself.…

It was the night before the first day of school, a new school in fact, and I was pretty eager and excited for the following day. I wasn’t sure whether to be thrilled or nervous, not knowing how my day would turn out. A few weeks prior, Mom had taken me to the store right down the block and we bought all new school supplies, so I was ready, prepared, and once again, excited. My parents were gracious enough to allow me to finish the year off, instead of transferring me to Woodland High School in the middle of the year. They knew it would be hard enough for me to switch schools, let alone in the middle of the year.…

A quote by Thomas Friedman says this, “When I was growing up, my parents told me, ‘Finish your dinner. People in China and India are starving,’ I tell my daughters, ‘Finish your homework. People in India and China are starving for your job.’” Last year in 9th grade, I couldn’t understand the fact some less fortunate people would kill for the opportunity I have. Sometimes, I will reflect on the past and think about how difficult it was for me to transition into being a middle school student to a high school and “college” student.…
