The first time I moved, I had never set foot on US soil. The idea of going to a new school, making new friends, and getting used to a new culture overwhelmed me. I pride myself on my social skills which helped me get accustomed to the new environment. I made friends almost immediately. Of course, there were a few bumps. Last year, when I moved to Virginia, it was like a kick into reality. I was forced to move away from friends that were like family, and get use to another place that I would soon have to call home. Usually I would have been quick to try and make new friends, but it was different this time around. Instead I spent a lot of time being quiet and alone, which eventually lead to me getting to know myself.…

Things you experience are one of the major factors in who you become. I am 27 years old and have moved 26 times in my life. This has made me extremely resilient to a variety of situations, especially change. I generally welcome chaos and get bored extremely easily with repetition because I am so used to things changing frequently. Most of the places I moved to were similar enough culture wise, but some of the places, like Chattanooga, TN, were very different from what I was used to.…

This is when moving started to get harder because I was going into the 2nd grade at this point and I could really understand leaving all my friends and somehow trying to make new friends from nothing. This has helped me in certain ways such as being able to work well with others and cooperate with others. It also has been bad for me never to have really close friends I have know for years and years. After Arizona, we moved to Washington State. This was probably my favorite place living because we finally settled down in one place and lived somewhere for more than just a few years.…

My parents only took pictures of me until I was eight years old. At that point, they gave me my first camera and bridled me with the job of “family photographer.” From then on, I was always behind the camera, which is why there are few pictures of me from eight to sixteen. Despite these unfortunate gaps in our scrapbooks, this early introduction to photography combined with my growing up in several multicultural communities across the world has helped me become the digital storyteller that I am today. I’ve moved five times in my life, each move to a different country.…
