As I heard this I thought it was a joke, how could my mom, my best friend, not be coming back until a year from now, how could she not attend my 8th grade promotion in which she promised she would be watching me from the front seats. As a part of me was lost I knew I had to play strong for my mother who was devastated by the death of her brother and the separation she now had from her children, but also for my little brother who always looked up to me. Instead of falling hard and “striking out” like many would, this experience helped me grow stronger as a person. From this I learned how to become independent and how to overcome hard
