Joe Leaming, an old friend who had owned Porsches, lived in Tucson and while there, I show him my new Porsche and saw his gray 356C Cabriolet. Joe knew more about Porsches than anyone, and he related that Porsche just released the new 6-cylinder 911. That intrigued me because the 356 was short on power and had significant vibrations. He told me about the oversteer problem, but that wasn’t of concern since I didn’t push cars to their limits. I enjoyed seeing him and was interested in the 911. Overall, the Tucson visit was constructive with little to no family controversy and the now clear weather made driving to Mineral Wells non-eventful.

That was easy. Next was the collective (vertical acceleration) and throttle. That was harder because the throttle was sensitive, and a change in the collective position required simultaneously twisting the throttle to compensate for the power level. The 200 RPM range limit made matters more complicated and if you ever hit the 200 RPM range, it was an automatic pink slip. Three pink slips would result in an evaluation ride that could lead to a setback or wash-out. The solution there was to hold the controls and pray for no wind gusts. The last control was the cyclic stick that controls fore and aft as well as left and right. Without the collective and throttle, it was difficult to keep it over the intended 20-foot square spot and with the combination it was impossible without a few hours of practice. Students would carefully increase collective and get it off the ground, and then a gust of wind would hit and they would begin swinging left and right, forward and back and up and down. Without an instructor, there was a 100% likelihood of a crash on the first

I became good at changing them. After a while, I figured how to set the carburetors leaner so they wouldn’t carbon up as much. However, the increased combustion temperature would extract the lead out of the burned gas and deposit it on the spark plugs. They still never made it past 5,000 until I figured out to use Amoco unleaded…

As a military child, I left the United States with my family at the age of five and spent eight years living overseas at duty stations in Japan, Germany, and Italy. We traveled extensively during vacations to over 20 different countries. As a result, I claim proficiency in ordering french fries and apple juice in several different languages. Although moving has brought me some misfortune, and many people would say that living overseas qualifies as adversity, I never felt it was such.…

I chose Essay #3 (Compare and Contrast) and Essay #5 (Original Argument) because after rereading them, I believe they were very well written and demonstrate my best work. Also from reading an essay early on from the year from a more recent essay, I was able to see how much I progressed on my writing skills. I believe these essays demonstrate my best work due to how I had strong arguments presented regarding the topic I was assigned. I believe in my Education: Online Versus Traditional Classes essay, I stated the pros and cons of each type of educational system and overall, gave a great idea to the reader on how each type of education plays a role in an adolescent’s life. I have been through so many experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. However, there is one experience in particular that moved me in ways I can hardly put into words. My freshman year of high school, I was given the opportunity to join the Klondike FFA Milk Quality Career Development Event team. Studying and competing in this event led me to develop a fighting hunger for winning. Halfway through my first year, I realized that I did not like to lose.…

Let me get one thing straight: I’m not in the business of crying. Crying equals weakness, so like most wannabe men growing up, my ducts were as dry as my mom’s attempt at cornbread. Opening up the still slender book of my life and leafing through to a random page, ninety-five percent of the time, the mood would be positive. I’m not saying that my book lacks trials and tribulations or moments of misery, but on the whole, melancholy moments reside in the minority, not the majority. Now crack the spine of the book.…

The trips were unplanned, as I have traveled to 13 different countries in four continents of the world. At least that was something to brag about after returning home from six years of military service. I would talk about these moments in a heartbeat when topics related to travel surface in conversations. Remembering and reliving those moments brings great fulfillment. Usually, there's a moment in life where I experience home in places I've visited.…

For as long as I can remember, as a child I was raised to believe that a man should be the king of his castle. When I was five years old, that statement became a fable to me. When I was five, my father asked me if I would like to learn martial arts. I was enticed by the “arts”, and agreed to what I thought was some form of painting. Although this was dispelled in my first lesson, I found a quiet sense of purpose in the rituals of the classes. My first year consisted of little more than striking the air in front of me, but I eventually learned a myriad of forms, drilled into my head by constant practice. The discipline of each form fascinated me, and I quietly submitted my entirety to perfecting every movement and breath.…

At that moment, I was in complete shock. One, I was afraid of horses and two, I have never been on a farm before. I wasn't sure what I should do first, so I got out of the car and hurried inside to find my new room. From there on out it was difficult adapting to everyday life because there was nothing to do here in the U.P. When I was little, I wasn’t the skinniest girl. I was 4’6 and 100 pounds in the fourth grade, which was definitely chubbier than most of the girls in my class. Because of that I always stood out from the bunch, and I wasn’t the only one who noticed. My aunt would always tell me that I should lose weight because if I didn’t do anything about this then no one would like me. She believes that skinny people are the prettiest.…
