Service Learning Project

For my Service Learning Project, I decided to interview a woman by the name of Mrs. Hawkes. Mrs. Hawkes is a lady that I have been working on and off with in the military for the past four and a half years. For this project, we sat down after work one day to discuss basically anything that came to mind such as where she is from, her religious views, family, etc. The main reasons I decided to interview Mrs. Hawkes is the high level of respect I have for her and she is probably the most religious person that I am around an a normal basis. I thought interviewing her was a great opportunity to personally get to k now someone that has different beliefs and opinions than myself. As opposed to me, she is a very open person when dealing with her religious views. I also thought speaking with her was a good idea because she is someone that will always say exactly what is on her mind even if it is not what someone wants to hear and I respect that. Hawkes and I have very different views on religion and how we go about expressing those views. I have not been to church in years but I still do consider myself to be religious. I also keep to myself when it comes to expressing my beliefs because I feel that people will believe what they want to believe and probably just don’t care about my opinions. This is where Mrs. Hawkes is very different than me. Mrs. Hawkes is a Christian that has not missed a church service or event for as long as she can remember. From her point of view, there is one right set of beliefs and one right way to practice those beliefs. To her, all other religious views and practices are wrong. She will openly let someone know that doesn’t share her beliefs that they are “going to hell” unless they change. She is a very loving and caring lady and I know she means well but I think she could go about getting her point across in a better

I was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas; my environment shaped me to become someone responsible, an over achiever, and a determined young man. The people who had the biggest impact on me is the woman who gave me life, my father, and my community. My mother was already there for me even before I stared walking, she was there to comfort me when I fell on my knees. She was my first teacher, the one who taught me morals and set up my standards; whenever we had a family party and all of our thirty members were together, she will make me introduce and address myself to every single one and if ever forgot to say hi to someone she will just give me a look to make realize my mistake, and I will immediately go on to that person and say sorry for…

Her word choice was carefully picked, precise and clean. Her tone was a calm yet persistent one where one could see how subtle but also determined she was on her work. She would pause just enough to make a clean speech, she didn’t hurry off or seemed nervous in any way which only interested the audience into paying attention to her. However, one may think that she would have an even more effective speech if she would of played with her voice a little more or do some sort of hand gestures. If she would have changed her voice into a stronger one she maybe could have expressed some strong feeling that wasn’t empathy or remorse.…
