As soon as we started facetiming I immediately started asking him various questions. I began by asking him where he was from and what influenced his decision to join the military. He responded by telling me how he was born in Belize and after he got jaundice at six months old, moved back to American with his parents and two older brothers. He then explained how he grew up hearing stories about his dad being in Vietnam and his grandpa fighting in the World War II Battle, which caused him and his brothers to have interest in the military. The summer of junior year finally came and I enlisted in the national guard. I stayed there and trained for a few years before trying to transfer into the army. My request was denied because I was technically an illegal immigrant. After that I didn’t try to enlist anywhere else because I didn’t think I would be accepted. It has been ten years since my cousin shipped off to Basic Military Training. I remember it was then, as I stood saying goodbye amongst other family and friends, when I realized what I wanted in life. I wanted the duty and the honor of serving my country and I wanted to make myself and my family proud. Unfortunately, this past year I found myself in a testing lab receiving a breathing treatment after a lung function test required emergency medical intervention. The physician entered the room, and quite astutely, told me everything I had wanted and worked for, was now unattainable.…

My parents were obviously upset that I didn’t finish high school, but it became quite clear that even though I was an intelligent young man, I did not have the discipline for school. I had to take another course of action, I have always thought about the military since I was a child, I had an uncle who served in the army who I truly looked up to and I figured maybe I go join the military to receive the discipline I needed. I had no intentions of telling my family I was joining the military since I already knew the remarks I would get about starting something that I probably would not finish. I called the Navy recruiting office in Downtown Brooklyn and as soon as the recruiter picked up the phone I told her “There’s no need to sell me, I just wanted to leave as fast as possible!”…

Introduction My personal experience in the United States Army is a unique one because when I was seventeen, I was already on a mission with minimal training and I was learning about the Mexican Army. Even though it was a short tour of about six months, it was a very exceptional time that I will never forget. Then my parents decided to move to the United States where I was introduced to the eighth grade, because my English was not proficient enough to go into high school, five years later, I decided to join the United States Army, in which I was twenty-two at that time. My experience in the United States Army has been phenomenal, I would not trade it for anything in the world to have stayed in the Mexican Army.…

There are a plethora of reasons a twenty two year old middle class male might decide to join the military. For example, I could have been born into a family that has a tradition of serving our nation, maybe a desire of doing something with “purpose”, a sense of patriotism, the list goes on forever. Throughout my time in the United States Coast Guard I have severed and will still serve with shipmates that all fall into one, if not all of these categories. They come from different places, upbringings, cultures, and economic status. Never the less, this is my story and how this eight years and counting adventure started.…
