How did you know you wanted an educator? Better yet, how does anyone know? The real question I had when I walked in to speak with my administrator was how did she know that she wanted to be an administrator? The response was a big surprise to me. But overall the interview I had with my administrator went into not only how she got involved in administration, but I wanted to know what her passions were, as well as the problems she is currently overcoming in her position as well as my biggest curiosity regarding foresight; where she would be now if she had taken a different path? The vision someone has at the beginning of their educational career is much different that the vision that they have once they are fully immersed in their craft. My administrator has worked in the district for 16 years now. She went to Cal State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) and got her teaching credential, a PPS Credential, CWA authorization and a Preliminary Administration Credential all at once. Determined, she completed all of her education within 2 years because she wanted to start a family. In The Will to Lead, The Skill to Teach: Transforming Schools at Every Level, the authors say “Schools are teams of educators with the goal of educating every child.” (Muhammad and Hollies 2012) I believe much like my administrator putting student’s needs above and before my needs is something all administrators should strive for. Public education is a revolving door of never ending changes, so we need to continue to predict, be observant and stay one step ahead of things in order to continue to be an effective educational
