Lessons From a Cat Cats have a tendency to randomly show up around people’s houses. They will march on your deck, tear up your screens and sneak into your garage. Sound familiar?…

I worked at Ahead with Horses at Sullivan Canyon for my community service. Ahead With Horses is an organization that helps many different disabled people, mostly kids, to help them overcome some aspects of their disability. Ahead With Horses throws many different activities like fairs and parties that many of the clients attend. They have a “horse show” where the kids walk around on the horses and sit in different places on the saddle. Ahead with Horses goal is to help disabled, disadvantaged and special-needs children by providing developmental therapy, education and recreation through horseback riding.…
The Hunted I didn’t know who I was. I woke up next to a bunch of muddy kids. They all smelled like they haven't showered in weeks. There was two twins, a chubby kid, and probably the skinniest kid I’ve ever seen. Then I realized I smelled just like them.…
It was hard to remember the dog Seeley had been before she became ill. A happy girl with curly, silver hair that relished each morning and delighted in each night. We knew she had been through quite a lot in her life, telling from the moon-like cataract clouding her left eye and the swollen nipples that hung lowly from her stomach. She enjoyed cuddling and seldom barked, but did often make weird scoffing noises when she was excited. She was our baby.…
Just checking in to see how your dog duties are coming along. I hope Emma is healing and that Diesel hasn’t eaten anyone yet. Our Foster dog almost died, was diagnosed with either/both leukemia and a stomach blockage of some sort, and then made a full recovery. We had a chance to have him put down, but I decided to give him more time and brought him home from the hospital with a prescription for Prednisone, which was expected to extend his life by maybe another 6 weeks. He’s in his third week now and, other than the shaved legs and belly, seems perfectly normal.…
Students were asked to create a dog pen with the biggest area. They had to make sure that they would have enough fencing material to cover a perimeter of 40 yards. With these 40 yards, students were asked to figure out the largest area for the dog to play in its pen. First, I know that we have 40 yards of fencing material.…
As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…
It was April 24 at 11:45 PM when they came. You know they, they the humans. It’s not like I’m anti human or anything, it’s just, my past with humans weren’t always on good terms. There was the Lattimore's who thought giving me kisses was showing love, and then there was the Jones’s who thought it would be nice to come and join me in the tub when thyself was being washed. Oh the horrors I had seen.…
About two or three years ago, we got a dog. This wasn't a normal dog, he was a rescue dog that we got from the shelter at Klemme. When I first saw him I was super excited because we haven't had a dog like him before. His name is Spots and he is a Cocker Spaniel. As soon as we got him home he was super friendly and really loving but, he needed a bath.…
The organization of which I have been employed for 6 years is the Humane Animal Rescue. Previously known as the Western PA Humane Society, our organization recently merged with the Animal Rescue League to create one large non profit. The merge has been difficult for many of the managers from both locations as they work to combine policies and procedures. Each day I work very closely with the medical manager, Dara, who I report to as a veterinary technician.…
Dogs are considered man’s best friend, but where do birds fit in the pet equation? Just like more traditional pets like cats or dogs birds have different personalities and attributes that make them unique. My love and passion started for birds when I was eleven and lived in Bay ridge Brooklyn, the apartment across from us had been vacant for a long time and finally had new tenants moving in. Curiously watching from the window as they brought each and everything they owned. I heard a couple of chirps and bells shaking and all of the sudden it was revealed a shiny red cage with two absolutely beautiful parakeets, flying around in joy probably because they were excited as much as their owners for their new home sweet home .…
Old Dogs Is it inherent to associate the elderly with mothballs and bingo? Is it a natural occurrence in nature for the youth to regard their ancestors as merely artefacts of a generation long gone, remnants of a society brought up by different social values and morals. Where have those beliefs of decades ago gone, where the elderly were considered oracles of wisdom and knowledge? Has the Internet connected us so extensively to the point that we no longer need to know of our own history and heritage? I can say confidently now that I myself was one of those people, always hearing but never listening, never fully engaging myself amongst those history lessons during Christmas lunch, never wishing to learn, never wishing to fully grasp an understanding.…
What my dog has taught me Humans are basically social animals, and in learning to coexist more peacefully, our pets could teach us a thing or two. Humans are sometimes arrogant enough to believe that our lives matter more than others, but in owning a dog it 's clear to see why it doesn 't. I know some people consider their pets as a part of their families. I strongly agree with that stance towards the dog I have in my home. Having been a dog owner since the age of nine, I can claim that a lot of growing and maturing goes on during that timeframe. Pets have this ability to teach people things that even humans cannot.…
A dog is something I had wanted for majority of my life, I wanted a companion that loved me so much that he would risk his own life for mine. When that moment finally came, I could not believe how lucky I was. Until we visited the vets. I never expected our first visit to the vets to leave me with such devastation and anger as it did. As the vet told my mother and me of our newly adopted puppy’s detrimental musculoskeletal disorder, my heart tore.…
