Personal Narrative: An Individualized Education Program

I walked into my school with confidence on the first day of my junior year. I walked down to my advisory with a big, bright smile on my face grinning from ear to ear that this school year would be an excellent year. When my advisor, Ms. Taverna gave me my schedule, I noticed I had two teachers in two of my classes (AP literature and algebra two) instead of one. That's when I realized that I was still under the 504 plan that was placed on to me in middle school. A 504 plan is similar to an I.E.P. (an Individualized Education Program), but a 504 plan is accommodations that help the individual student successes in the classrooms. My heart dropped because I was still seen as incapable to learn under the law. In my previous years of high school, KIPP never actually put me into separate testing or even put me in the group with the other 504 kids, I wasn't also in the same classes with them. The sudden realization that I was still a part of the 504-group made me feel like I wasn't as smart as I was made out to be by my teachers and my peers in the previous years. …show more content…
(Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) because I was an extremely hyper seven-year-old. As a result of my misdiagnosis, I was given an I.E.P., which caters to students with special needs. As a result, I was placed in special classes throughout most of the elementary school. This made me not want to work hard and grow in school. In middle school, they changed the I.E.P. to a 504 plan because I showed that I could learn, but I still didn't show that I could go without extra assistance in my classes. Now as a current junior I didn't have that problem, at least I thought I

When it comes to discrimination, most people's thoughts are immediately drawn to the concepts of race and gender. Both racism and sexism are hot-button issues in society today, and rarely a day goes past without news programs airing stories about discrimination in our culture. Unfortunately, discrimination against people with disabilities is a much less well-known issue. If you child has a disability, they are protected against discrimination by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. This means that if your student is otherwise qualified to receive a service or to participate in an activity, their disability cannot prevent them from doing so.…

As Ms. Kaysen has her graduated high school and her previous educational history unknown, it is difficult to determine eligibility. It does not appear her disability impacted her education, as such a 504 plan may be more appropriate. Although Ms. Kaysen has completed high school, an educational assessment may provide information that could be useful in an evaluation for accommodations in a post secondary setting. If a disability category was required, a serious emotional disability (SED) is the most appropriate. Colorado Department of Education Qualification: 1.…

Walking into Kekionga Middle School I noticed a lot of differences from schools that I had visited previously. The most visible one being the school’s population and location. I had never observed at an urban school and have never felt such a cultural difference between me and the students. With a school population that was so diverse and not within the same background as I was, I immediately started thinking about my future teaching career and what I would do in that kind of atmosphere. I later on asked Mrs. Parker why she chose this school and said that it was because she went to Fort Wayne Community Schools all of her life, so she did not feel change at all.…

As I looked around at my new classmates on my first day of public school, I was in complete shock. All around me I saw students who did not care in the slightest about their education and who saw school as simply a chore instead of an adventure. They slumped down in their chairs, cheated off of each other left and right, rolled their eyes at teachers, and spent each day watching the clock, waiting for the bell to ring that would released from their “prison.” That August morning, I felt like I was in a completely different world: one where I did not belong.…

I had never gone through such an impactful change in my life since my parents divorced when I was young and my life had been favorably consistent up to this point. Though it was difficult, I am glad I went through this experience. It made me a better student and a harder worker. The courses in public school were different than what I had come to know and, suffice to say, much more difficult. I was forced to push myself to entirely new limits, making myself work harder than I ever had before.…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts – Winston Churchill. The fear of failure is one that drives many people to never attempt to achieve their goals in life. I never allowed my fear to limit me under any circumstance. The biggest lesson I learned when I was in high school was that in life you are going to run into situations you may find difficult, but you should never try to work ways of avoiding it because that is a part of life. When transitioning into middle school academics were a struggle for me and eventually caught the attention of my school board.…

I have known this program for years due to the fact that my brother attended, after conducting this interview I have gain lot more knowledge and background of the organization. However, I do remember was that the teachers from the after school program would go to the Public schools in the neighborhood and pick up the children for the after school program. My mom would tell me stories of when my brothers were in the program the teachers would teach the children more than what the DOE requires of them, and when a Specialist from the DOE would come for an inspection to see how things are going the teachers would often hide whatever they did that is not a part of the DOE Creative Curriculum. That was interesting to know that they are will to go off topic in order for the children to learn. I asked Mrs. B and she said they actually still because children are often curious and things will often get off tangent in order to nurture that child curiosity.…
