I am currently a senior at the University of Maryland studying engineering and physics and I feel that before I move onto graduate school or move into the work force I would like to have the experience that is AmeriCorps. I want to have the experience for a couple of reasons, some more selfish than others. For one I do feel that I have been very blessed in my life. I was able to get a good education and never have to worry about too much in life, and for that reason I feel that it is my duty to give back to my community and I believe that AmeriCorps is a great way to do that. Which leads into my second reason, and my urgency of wanting to do AmeriCorps as soon as I graduate. I would like service and giving back to the community to be something I …show more content…
In a broader sense most things worth doing are not going to be easy to do. It is always going to feel inconvenient. But if they are worth it to you, you have to go out and do them even though it is scary. I was terrified to leave everything I knew and go to a foreign country, but I decided traveling was important to me and that it was worth the inconvenience. Looking back now almost a year later, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. And because I have already done the hardest part, which was my first big trip, I know that traveling will be a part of my life. The fear is gone and I realize just how much it is worth the inconvenience. I realize that was seemingly off topic, but that is exactly how I feel about AmeriCorps and my reason for applying. Just like I wanted traveling to be a part of my life, I want service to be a part of mine now. My first reaction to AmeriCorps was one of, well that would be nice but it would be inconvenient. I mean in the time I did a program I could have already been working or started graduate school. And that is when I knew this is something I have to do if I am serious about service being a part of my

In reading Harry & Mary Meinhardt’s legacy, I was reminded of my own career in the military. I also enlisted in the United States Army right out of high school, at the tender ager of 17. And much like Harry, I proudly served for twenty-six years. I rose the rank of Sergeant First Class before transitioning to a Warrant Officer. Having an education has always been of value to me and so has the idea of helping others.…

During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

I am Daphne Williams, I'm originally from a small town near Pensacola, FL where growing up my parents pushed to work hard and do right by my elders. I never thought going to school to further my studies would be an option being that it wasn’t enforced in my household growing up. A few years after graduation of high school I joined the service after realizing that minimum wage wasn't exactly what I wanted to continue with. At the time of joining the service I realized I wanted to be capable of doing so much more but had little or no direction as to what I wanted to do exactly. After completion of my first two years in the service I hated it until I crossed paths with a great leader while deployed in Afghanistan.…

Every day there are thousands of men and women serving our country in the armed services. They are someone’s brother, sister, father, mother, aunt, uncle, son or daughter. They spend many months and sometimes years in a foreign country far away from the comforts of their home, some without family or friends to thank them for the sacrifices they make daily. Since the age of four when I saw the cover of Time Magazine featuring wounded soldiers, I have desired to do something to say “thank you” to the troops for their service and show my appreciation for them. Living in Maryland, so close to Washington DC, you would think there would be a lots of opportunities to thank our troops.…
