Personal Narrative: American Brahmen

Improved Essays
My Junior Year I raised an American Brahman Steer for the FFA Club. American Brahmans are known for being an aggressive breed, difficult to break in, and very skittish, as mine was. Last year was my first year to show a steer. The past three years I showed Duroc hogs, and have gotten first in my class numerous of times. It was a very drastic change, because hogs are easier to tame and handle. The steer I worked with last year was extremely skittish and startled easily. As a result I was dragged in the arena, bounced around, and kicked. I had big purple bruises to prove it. I participated in the Rio Grande Livestock Show Cover girl, and went on stage with a gigantic black bruise on my knee from a kick by the steer. The steer’s stubbornness …show more content…
When I entered the arena he was not skittish or throwing a rampage like before, but once the judge got close and tried feeling his side, the judge and I went in circles. With me trying not to lose hold of the steer, the judge trying to calm the steer, and the steer in the middle of both of the judge and I trying to escape, was very humiliating. The judge found it very amusing and chuckled at the situation. I ended up getting fourth in my class out of ten steers and could not have been more relived I was able to show this steer in any way possible. The gentlemen who gave me the tip, watched me show and was in shock of how much progress I had made with this steer and although I was doubtful to show another steer, told me “you will always learn from your experiences” For this upcoming year I am showing an all black Gurt-cross Steer, and with my prior experience, have more knowledge and I work with this steer every day. I have showed this steer at two prospect shows, each with getting first place. To be able to learn from my experiences is the biggest blessing I can receive. I will continue to succeed in anything and everything I pursue, overcoming any obstacle that confronts

Whether you’re taking on the task of a couple of feeder pigs in your backyard to feed your own family or trying to start your own small hog farm so much of success lies in the details; the little things than no one thinks to ask before they dive in feet first. Here, a few of the things we’ve learned (some the hard way) and hope others don’t have to: 1. Don’t Feed The Pigs. At least not by hand.…

The issues that animals are put through for entertainment, experimentation, food, clothing, and wildlife is horrifying. Animals are enslaved, beaten, electrocuted, strangled, burned, stabbed, and skinned alive to be used for human use and consumption. For the clothing industry, millions of animals are killed by being electrocuted, strangled, and skinned alive. This issue is very important because clothing should be made out of fabrics rather than animal fur. Millions of mice, rats, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs, and other animals are burned, blinded, poisoned, and cut up alive for experimentation.…

Did you know bison can grow to 5 or 6 feet tall and can weigh up to 2,500 pounds? They are pretty huge animals, and they look even more ginormous when 5 of them are standing right in front of you. We were in Colorado at the time; enjoying the not unbelievably humid air (unlike Louisiana). We were staying at an RV park right next to an ATV trail; which we planned to ride our ATV on. The day after we got there, I was sitting outside around 4 or 5 PM, being bored, when I decided to ask if I could ride the ATV down the trail a little ways.…

People think the way animals are treated is considered animal abuse, and with involvement and personal experience in rodeo this is not the case. People think that while the audience of the rodeo is being entertained, animals are physically aggravated to an immoral extent.…
