Personal Narrative: Am I Prepared For College

Improved Essays
Tears had been dripping down my face the entire day while I did not have a will to get out of bed. This was what occurred the day that the final grades were released for the fall quarter. I received a C in my multivariable calculus course. All that was going through my mind was, "How could a math major get a C," "Did I not study enough?" "Am I prepared for college?" I stayed in my room all day and did not eat much. The day that followed was quite different, I reflected on why this occurred. I had not been getting much sleep prior to the test, I was extremely anxious during finals week, and it was not that I did not study, but rather that I did not enjoy the class enough to retain information. College is a vast place where one goes to grow as an academic and as a person. As a freshman, it has been more of a place where reality hits you right in the face. During my first quarter, I was confident that I could succeed in all my classes or that I could get by with the same efforts that I placed back in high school. When my grade came back for the fall quarter, I felt like a failure. College is not high school, and I learned this the hard way. This quarter I basically live in my hall's study room trying to focus more on my studies. Not only this, but I am trying to take classes that I enjoy more. …show more content…
I felt lost during the first quarter due to the fact that I was quite sure that I did not want to stay as a math major. However, I was not sure as to what it was that I was interested in. This quarter I tried to tackle those pesky general education courses that everyone talks about. I found out that I have a real passion for political science enough to say that I want to talk about the government with anyone that I encounter. The fact is that once I started going out of my comfort zone I found classes that I enjoyed and that I am getting good grades

“I know applying to colleges is the last thing you want to do right now, but you might change your mind,” a trusted friend told me. It was December of my senior year of high school, and college application deadlines were approaching quickly. I was recovering from a major illness at the time, and wasn’t ready to think about college. My plan was to spend a year living at home and working before I pursued higher education. In the following months, my recovery progressed rapidly.…

My college search has brought me to many universities: visiting campuses, and talking to students, alumni, and faculty. While I could receive an excellent education from any of these schools, Notre Dame offers something "more. " I first noticed this something "more" through a contact I made with Kyle Cowdrick, ND class of 2015, who I have been emailing back and forth with over the last year about admissions, Notre Dame, and the college experience. I once asked him why he bothered to use his precious time to mentor me, someone he barely knew before, his answer: "It's the Irish way".…

“They say that college is where you find yourself, but I feel more lost than ever.” Although this may be true, I began to think I was looking for something to blame. This quote replayed in my head, as I walked out of the counselor's office with both my parents along my side as I felt the vibe of their uncertainty with my decision to go back. Before it gets good, it gets more boring. Summer had started and it’s been a year since I’ve been to college.…

Usually I handle stressful situations well, but the idea of college and getting rejected has caused me to kinda freak out and worry about applying to schools.…

I have also been able to reflect on myself as a person, and identify strengths, values, and abilities I possess that I can use to my advantage.
