Personal Narrative: Allauna

Improved Essays
No experience in my entire life has taught me to be myself as much as meeting my friend, Allauna. Me and Allauna are best friends, and we met the second week of school. We have had sleepovers, gone to dances as friends, and I don’t have a clue where I would be without her. We are bestfriends, and we have our ups and downs, but we always forgive each other by the end of the day.

When I was in 5th grade, I didn’t really know a lot of people in my class because I had moved the past year. After a few days, I started to get the hang of it. One day, when we were in literacy, our counselor brought in a new girl. She was tall and very quiet. When Mrs. Buchanan introduced her, she said her name was Allauna. Allauna sat down at one of the back tables. After class, I decided that I was going to go out of my comfort zone and ask her if she wanted to sit by me at lunch. She barely whispered, “Sure.” When we went to lunch, she told me she was from Texas. I told her that I was born in

and my brother’s name is C.J. When we were at lunch, Allauna also told me that she went to school at Theodore Jones in second grade. My mom teaches second grade at Theodore Jones. I introduced her to my friend Abby, who also went to Theodore Jones. Abby and I started school at Wooster on the same day. It turns out, Abby and Allauna were in the same class in second grade. When me and Allauna were at recess, we would talk like we have known each other for years. I sat by her every day at lunch and played with her at recess every day.

Allauna and I have been friends since the day we met. We have sleepovers all the time and aren’t afraid to tell each other something. We have never fought or argued about something serious. There was a time when we argued if a woman has ever been to the moon. Nothing has ever taught me to be myself as much as meeting Allauna. When I met her, I thought I had met a perfect little, quiet girl. Boy, was I wrong. We are weirdos

Through the years, I have moved to almost 3 culturally different countries, my experiences have been nothing less of hectic. From changing to country to country to school to school. I have be-friended people from all around the world and have managed to gather a few bits and pieces from each of their cultures. It is so fascinating finding out about traditions around the world. To strive in a multi-cultural atmosphere would obviously be tough, but I have thankfully done it more than once.…

My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

A Thousand Experiences Throughout life, individuals face different obstacles and struggles; my obstacle was my tendency to be shy. For example, when I was faced with social pressures like speaking in front of a class for a presentation, or meeting new people, I would be a nervous wreck. My palms would sweat, my voice would tremble, and it took all the strength I could muster to overcome my irrational fears. I only had a small, albeit close knit group of friends due to my introverted ways.…

Toward the end of my second grade year, I walked down to the woods like usual to go mess with the low grade bridge we constructed to get across the very narrow stream at the time. I reach the outskirt of the woods when I notice I girl wearing bright colored clothes moving some branches from across the stream her appearance struck me because the bias I had toward girls at the time and the fact that she was messing up my bridge.…

In Bill Ashcroft’s Post-Colonial Transformation he describes how all individuals identify as being a part of a group with others who share the same or similar experiences. Together, they can identify as one in a world where groups are necessary to overcome challenges. This past summer I was able to experience this phenomenon that Ashcroft described when my friend and I went to Germany for two weeks and lived with Louisa Fortmann, a former foreign exchange student from the previous year. This “journey” demonstrated the varying levels of “Place,” Ashcroft’s word to describe the regions people consider home because of the shared connections. Not only was I leaving my family, the smallest group I identify with, but I was also leaving the United…
