In the discombobulation of day to day life, all types of people are going to try to knock you down. This hardship was experienced personally by Brenda Roza as she realized that “there may not be that person next to you that's going to speak up for you”. The crisp breeze rustled my hair as I walked out of my house on the fall September day with my dad drilling instructions into my head. It was my first Little League baseball game ever, and my dad wanted to make sure it wasn’t my last. Being seven years old and never touching a baseball was something that had scared me; a lot. I had no idea what to think about this foreign, petrifying, game could possibly be about. The car ride from my house was only a few minutes away from the fields where I would begin my baseball career.…

I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. It slowly turned into randoms bouts of extreme rage, where I’d take out my anger physically, not just on the walls and mirrors of my childhood home and not just on my family, but on myself. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…

Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. I was displaced to my aunt's house for weeks and missed most of my 1st grade year. When I was seventeen, I walked in on my home being robbed by some local kids. They were upstairs when I came into the house and escaped through a window, but the idea that I could have come home earlier still haunts me.…

After a few long hours, I am awakened by a slight tap on my hand which is hanging over the small bench. I peek my bright green eyes open and squint from the blazing sun in the distance. I look around and don’t see anything that caused the tapping. I sit up, yawn, and scratch at my feline-like ears. I yawn once more and stretch my stiff human bones.…

Her scarred hands twitched imperceptibly as she plucked the glass from his grasp, face as unreadable as the statues in the museum not too far away. It almost felt like a dream -- unreal and untrustworthy, the scene that played out before her. It was not her right, to meet with Roman upon the rooftop, god-like conspirators deciding the fate of the mortals that milled about below them. More and more often she had to remind herself that she had not always been a god, but had once been something unrecognizable and unworthy. Roman had been gifted with his so-called divinity, Rafaella, however, had bled for it.…

Alison was the protagonist of Fun Home, and she gave her experiences through childhood, her teen years, and beyond. I find that Alison’s most interesting aspect is her various relationships with her enigmatic father and how she’s always optimistic about it. As I’m reading the first few descriptions of Alison’s father, such as the event of the fallen Christmas tree, I feel a growing hatred towards the father. It doesn’t make sense that she can put up with the “Half-bull half-man monster” through college. Why is it that Alison compares herself to her dad as “spartan to athenian, modern to victorian, Butch to Nelly and Utilitarian to Aesthete,” but she still manages to give the guy a break when he is a family man once in awhile?…

The catch of her life There are many childhood memories that I cherish, but one that stands out most is going on fishing trips with my family. I’ll never forget the first time my dad and grandpa taught me , and the enthusiastic look on their face when I caught my first trout. My years when I was just a little girl were one of the best. Whenever I would go to my grandma’s house we would always play games such as dominos, scrabble, or card games. Card games and board games were always my favorite and I would love to beat anyone who thought they were better. One of my favorite games to play was baseball, we would go into my grandma’s living room and a take a deflated ball (representing the baseball) and hit it with our hands to create the bat. Then someone would pitch and we would create bases made out of chairs couches, pillows, or the wall.…
