Personal Narrative: Air Conditioning

The strict leather with every grip or push of a button, the annoying click that resonates across the room -- I always adored holding a video game controller in my hands. There was a reason for my excitement too: one simple, phenomenal reason -- the reason I decided to play these games in the first place. It was summer break, and while everyone played outside in the warm weather and beautiful breathless scenery...I would immerse myself in an virtual world of the same standards, but with the added bonus of air-conditioning. I always found myself partial to the villains, especially ones with a cryptic past or heartbreaking future-- one they could never see coming...but do you know who could?
Me...all the players could. It was an inevitable future only visible to the player…
I’d sit there, contemplating when and how this villain would meet their downfall. A tragedy indeed, but it always spurred so many thoughts in my head. I could always find a deeper meaning, and quickly, I realized how truly influential these characters had become.

(I know what you’re thinking, having a crush on a fictional person...quite childish!) His name was Sephiroth [Seth-er-roth], the main antagonist from the hit RPG Final Fantasy VII. The way he spoke with pure confidence, the words laced with an threat but spoken with no emotion “tell me what you cherish most, give me the pleasure of taking it away.”, I loved it. He never once let his guard down from the people around him and moved with an absolute elegance. Elegance to him was the unnatural of course. It was in the long white hair that flowed to the knees, feline green eyes that held nothing but power and strength -- he wore nothing but black, a cape that billowed behind him like the ebony stained night. The complex world of gaming often tends to be perplexing to outsiders who do not understand the purpose of spending hours in front of a flickering computer screen. A great deal of people find it extremely difficult to make social connections in the real world, because they are simply uncomfortable…

Video games are arguably even less associated with storytelling than comics are, with some critics believing “that the video-game form is incompatible with traditional concepts of narrative” (Bissel, 93). Where the medium truly excels, however, is with its capacity for immersion. Like how the addition of sound allowed filmgoers to not just watch the action but hear it, “Every new medium that has been invented … has increased the transporting power of narrative” (Rose, 36). Where readers of books and viewers of movies are passive, gamers take an active role in their narratives. In games like Mass Effect this means making key decisions that affect the development of the plot, but in games like Naughty Dog’s Uncharted and The Last of Us, this…

Looking up meekly at the sun shining through a grimy window, Ava realized she was in a cellar, somewhere, but she did not know where. What she did know is that she woke a day earlier, handcuffed to the rusty iron radiator that was anchored to the basement wall, but for how long she could not tell. For the entire next day, her screams for help went unheeded, as she sat on the cold basement floor, not only famished and dehydrated, but also mostly exposed and petrified. Adjusting the petite negligée she wore, she attempted to shield her expose skin from touching the frigid cement floor in an attempt to remain warm. All the while her left hand remained intractably cuffed to the radiator a little over a half meter off the ground.…

Despite having lived in Georgia for the past couple of years and having dealt with the immense heat and humidity there, I was still unprepared for the heat of the Arizona summer. As an experienced hiker, I thought of myself as experienced enough to deal with the heat and smart enough to not have to worry about it. I would find out all too soon that I was neither experienced enough nor smart enough to deal with the Arizona heat. I left my house at four in the morning, reasoning that since I had left so early I would be able to get out to the trail, do the hike, and get back, all before it became too hot. There was an accident on the road and I had to go about twenty minutes out of my way in order to reach the highway.…

Ever since I can remember video games have always been my escape. On my ninth birthday I received my xbox 360 and since that day I have never look back. With my xbox I have made memories and friendships that will last life a life time. Although some believe things in life are either good or bad, it can be seen through Xbox that things are both good and bad, but it’s the proportion between good and bad that matters, this can be seen through new games, finishing games, and new systems that proves that a disproportionate amount of good versus bad creates good memories. With the Xbox there were many games that I have played that have taken me on hundreds of adventures.…
