I became involved with the math club at Spaulding after a friend in my home room suggested I come to a meeting after school. After attending, I realized math club might have been a somewhat misleading name. While we certainly did some math, it wasn’t at all like the math I would do in class. Math club was more focused on the competitive aspect of math. We would do problems to prepare for various competitions in the state. Joining the club certainly improved my mathematical abilities. In large part due to attending regularly, I made several seniors a little annoyed by winning our best in school award on the UVM math exam as a sophomore. More often than not, however, our meetings devolved into a group of students that just wanted to have some

The transition from High School can often times be very frustrating for students. L. Lennie Irvin opened my eyes to one of the bad habits I picked up on in High school. I walked into the familiar main entrance of the school, crossing my arms and setting my face into what I thought was an intimidating glare. Although I looked like an angry toddler, with my round face and childish glower, my attitude came across very clearly: I was not happy at all to be back at school. After getting into a huge fight with my friend group earlier that year, I was starting high school essentially friendless. It wasn’t as if I didn’t have another group of people to fall back onto.…

Many students tend to join extracurriculars their friends join. Rather than picking the club that describes them as who they are, they drift towards activities that have more members or “look good” on college applications. When I was a freshman, I joined eleven clubs, signing up for whichever clubs my friends told me to. My email was filled with the dates of club meetings I could not recall joining. As the year progressed and I realized which clubs I had a passion for.…

Prior to middle school, I thought I was satisfied with my position. I had friends, got along with my teachers, excelled in sports, and got decent grades in my classes. Back then, I thought this well-roundedness I sought between these necessities would offer me self-satisfaction. Little did I know, however, that I was going to confront this well-rounded nature of mine during my first awards ceremony in middle school. Among the most intelligent, artistic or athletic of the students present there, I was the one of the few who simply struggled to stand out.…

By participating in these clubs, I am doing way more than listing a club I joined for a college application to show the type of person I am. I am building experiences, learning different sides of myself (finding what I like), building character, and demonstrating teamwork. To elaborate, the Speech/ Debate team is a perfect demonstration of what I am implicating when I say ‘clubs build character.' This club helps you appreciate different points of views and how to apprehend how others might think compared to you, how bland their point of view can be or how ingenious and respectable their opinion seems to you. By arguing (constructively), you learn over time that not everyone might share your perspective, and how you, in reality are a teeny-tiny ant compared to the world.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

We all have setbacks from time to time, sometimes even when we like nothing can go wrong, life can take us by surprise. My major setback was out of my control, and it discouraged me for some time. During the middle of my sophomore year, I was in a horrific car accident.
