He had the opportunity to come on a full scholarship. Interestingly enough, he new my Ghanaian family because my uncle was the president at the time. Junior Gideon Adu Atta Gyamfi was his name. He had the typical four names of a person from Accra so I knew what culture he was accustomed too. That being said, I was worried about him adapting to the foreign culture of the U.S. Knowing how barbaric the school was and I didn't want to see him torn apart by ignorant kids. So I made sure we my friends and I looked after him. Nothing significant happened in eighth grade

A dilemma that I faced, and still am facing is simply the decision about what I want to do with my life after my high school career. In my freshman year of high school my goal was simply to get through the year in one piece. I was forced to conform to my new environment and all the strict rules that came along with it. Along with that it was the sudden transition from being the "big dogs" as eighth graders at my middle school to being "fresh-meat" in my first year high school. With so much attention placed on me as a freshman like on the varsity basketball team, where I was constantly forced to prove my worth to the coach and the players, to stepping out of my comfort zone and performing in a mandatory play for the rest of the the school as…

I walked into the familiar main entrance of the school, crossing my arms and setting my face into what I thought was an intimidating glare. Although I looked like an angry toddler, with my round face and childish glower, my attitude came across very clearly: I was not happy at all to be back at school. After getting into a huge fight with my friend group earlier that year, I was starting high school essentially friendless. It wasn’t as if I didn’t have another group of people to fall back onto.…

If you could build up quick bursts of speed, long and triple jumps suited you.…

My life began to spiral downward before fifth grade began. I found myself an endless loop over summer vacation of waking up, experiencing the day as a blur, sleep, then repeat. This drove me to discover a new way to spend my day. On the television I noticed a recurring advertisement for a game called ‘World of Warcraft’. At first I instilled the mindset that I could spend my time pragmatically but eventually I succumbed to boredom.…

Looking back, high school wasn’t really all that bad. In fact, the experiences that I went through, whether good or bad, has shaped who I am at this moment. I remember back in freshman year when I thought that high school was going to be the worst four years of my life. As a young middle schooler, I had been warned by various movies such as Mean Girls about the high school life and treated it like a documentary. At that time, I had this idea that everyone in high school was rude, evil, and out to get me.…
