Personal Narrative: Advocating For Equality

Transitioning from a small catholic elementary school with roughly sixty peers in my graduating class to Hudson High School was a shock. For the first time in my life I was surrounded by hundreds of unfamiliar faces, many of which looked nothing like mine. At first it was extremely easy for me to fall into the stereotypes of a large public school- categorizing my peers as populars, loners, jocks, and nerds. It was in having personal relationships with people from these different social groups that I discovered that the differences between us were minuscule.

As a young woman interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) there were plenty of times where I felt like I was at a disadvantage compared to the boys in my year. Those

About five years ago my oldest sister got married to a young man named Tony-coming from an Italian family we all thought Tony to be one of our own, so when we heard his last name was "Chin" the room went silent. Old prejudices were clear to arise as my family learned that my sister was in love with a Chinese person. Being in sixth grade, the first time I meant Tony, I expected him to have an accent and hardly speak any English- I couldn't have been more wrong about him. Tony is truly an American guy who loves the Cleveland Indians, fast food, and my sister. My small-mindedness couldn't have made me more blind of a wonderful man who treats my sister with respect. Inclusion and racial diversity is something I strive to protect because if my sister met her husband fifty years ago, the nation would tell them they could never be together, that their love is wrong. Their relationship makes me remember that we are all human beings and race shouldn't be the factor that matters- what matters is the content inside of ones

I was born a woman; probably my father wasn’t so happy about my gender. Perhaps he wanted a boy named after him. I can’t remember my first thought as a baby, but I’m sure I wasn’t able to distinguish between males and females, or the fact that the doctor was a male and the nurse was a female. I just knew I wanted to love and be loved regardless of my race, sex, or religion. My friend Melissa was raped, and it was her fault.…

Miss Representation makes the simple claim that females aren't represented enough in positions of power, and when women actually are portrayed in large media formats, it's usually as a sexual object. Young girls are taught to change their physical appearance to please men and act “lady-like”. This can mean learning how to cook and clean, babysit. These young women are often discouraged from being interesting in STEM fields by their mentors in favor of more simple and delicate careers like the arts.…

It was a simple day in a dark theater, my father had left me alone with a friend in this weird booth with a lot of buttons, switches, sliders and dials. It seemed really cool to me and he had even left me with my favorite of his friends, Paul Riopelle. My father walked out of the booth and into the lobby and he didn’t come back before the show started but Paul assured me that my father would be back soon. So we sat and watched the play and it was really funny actually, I don’t remember much of it now except for one part where, Lo and behold my father walked in demanding 40 years back income tax from the grandfather character. They then proceeded to have a lengthy discussion about paying the U.S government income tax, which ended with my father being startled by snakes and storming out angrily.…

Growing up the only girl in a house with a traditional mother made my grandmother submissive. She lived in a home with her mother and grandmother and “it was up to [her] to put the food on the table.” Since both of her parents were working, and boys during the 60s did not do household chores according to my great grandmother, my grandma was expecting to cook and clean the kitchen when she got home from school. She needed to do her part to help around the house because there were a lot of men living under one roof. My grandma looks back on it now and said it was very annoying that her brothers never had to do anything and she always had to clean up after them.…

The idea that women do not belong in STEM or are not good enough to be in STEM has to start somewhere. Discrimination starts in the classroom and carries over into the workplace. Education is essential for STEM related jobs, and women are not as likely to go into STEM because of the experience in the classroom or the lack thereof. Studies have shown that high school is not too late to introduce an interest in STEM, to girls specifically. “..science education in the United States is not tapping the potential of many diverse groups… of African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans - as well as White women…”…

When women do not see other women in STEM fields, there are few role models and the cycle continues. The effort to increase female interest in STEM does not decrease the risk of boys entering STEM fields (United States. Congress, 2010). According to both Rupe and Reimann, their interest in STEM fields was sparked and encouraged by their teachers (personal communication April 25, 2016). Encouraging all students to explore STEM fields, the message that boys are better at STEM topics, will be less of an obstacle for…

    Sexist Attitudes

Looking back on high school, it is obvious that there were some strong underlying sexist attitudes in the STEM departments. I was a sophomore in when I had my male chemistry teacher told me that he, “didn’t think I would be able to handle honors molecular biology,” and he proceeded to advise me to take an astronomy class instead, one that wouldn’t be too difficult. I had a 95% in his class and when I went against his judgement, I received an 88% in biology. He underestimated me even though I had the intelligence and the drive to do well in that honors biology class. I wondered why that was until I noticed that I was one of the few girls in that chemistry class.…
