Personal Narrative: Advanced Geometry Class

I am sure that all of us have had a moment where we panic because we forgot about a quiz and we didn’t study for it. But have you been handed a study guide and you aren’t able to do anything on it? In middle school, I took Advanced Geometry and Honors Algebra 2 together in the same year. In geometry class, we were just given a worksheet, and we were expected to understand how to do it from looking at the examples provided at the top of the worksheet. We would get at least three worksheets a week, and if we didn’t finish them in class, which nobody ever had time to finish them in class, then it was homework due the next day. Sometimes, it got really frustrating. My teacher would never explain the worksheets, she just gave them …show more content…
The week before our exam, my teacher handed us our thirteen page, eight units, study guide of everything that was going to be the exam- problems and just general information that we need to know for it. Turns out, I only remembered how to do the things in the last unit we covered. I could not remember how to do anything else. So, I turned to my notebook. I opened the first page. Blank. Turned to the second page. Blank again. Third, blank. Fourth. Blank. Blank, blank, blank! There was not a single number or letter written down on any of the pages. There were plenty of drawings, however. I start to panic. I have an entire five days before my exam. Plus, I have extracurriculars after school all week. I didn’t think that there was a single hour that I could study for the exam.

I took a book home. And relearned how to do a whole eight units. I started by doing what I thought could be right on the packet. That method only got me to six right questions out of almost fifty. Once I saw that that method was not working, I just started reading through the textbook unit by unit to be able to understand and to comprehend what I was doing fully. This actually

Entering into unit two of the Math 1201 course, I find that the concepts in the reading crystallize in my mind after an average of two to three readings. Failing to employ proper use of fundamental mathematical concepts appears to be the major bane that deters my ability to comprehend the material any faster. For example, neglecting to execute operations in the proper sequence caused me initial problems when converting from the general quadratic form to the standard form, specifically completing the square. Furthermore, my neglect resulted in personal doubt in my ability to perform the operation as I would arrive at an answer different than the solution contained within the textbook. Realizing the error in my conversions was a result in my…

Needless to say I was sweating bullets and deeply concerned about not being able to succeed.…

I can recall a time when I challenged myself to do tremendous work over the summer. That summer was this year, where I encouraged myself to take drivers education for my license next year, test out of Algebra 2 and P.E., work at my parent’s nail salon to earn some cash, do my AP History and Advanced English homework, practiced my viola for Symphonic Orchestra, read during the night, and study for the S.A.T. (which was too early). I was prompted to act because I recently found my ambitions for my future, which is wanting to become some sort of engineer (undecided, but it is in this field), have the highest GPA possible, and get accepted into University of Michigan. These objectives did not came to me at the speed of light, but naturally throughout…

“It’s all Greek to me” is an expression that epitomized my math experience junior year both literally and figuratively. Sins, cosines, derivatives. You name it, I was lost. My mom had cautioned against taking honors pre-calculus but I decided to enroll in the class anyway. I would do all of my homework, and would lock myself in my room and study for hours but my grade in the class kept dropping.…

Memory is very important in your day to day life. You also use memory when studying of learning about a new topic. By thinking critically about a subject you can greatly increase your memory. In order for things to stick in your memory you have to value or really care about the topic, issue, or object. In “Experience Psychology” the author states “If you think about memory as a physical event in the brain, you can see that memorizing materials is like training your muscles” (King 235).…

Back then I rarely studied anything in my class because I had a pretty robust memory and could just remember what I wrote in my notes or what was said in class and for anything that was challenging to me, that’s the only time where I might have used the interleaved practice strategy where I space out something very challenging that loomed over my head coming up before the exam. I learned about all of the helpful strategies such as practice testing in history class when my teacher gave us a quiz every other day, which while being annoying, was surprisingly helpful to…
