Personal Narrative: Adaptive Swim

Improved Essays
When I was just a little kid, I noticed I was not like the other children. I had a habit of talking to myself, and making up imaginary stories that I would act out in class. Soon after entering school, the other kids noticed, and would harass me for talking to myself. Since I was ‘different’ from them I was often left out of games and activities. As I grew older, I recognized that many other kids were ignored and rejected, and it broke my heart. I realized soon after high school I wanted to start breaking down these boundaries, and during my sophomore year I became a lifeguard and started to teach swim lessons. Soon after starting I started to teach the adaptive and inclusion swim classes. Adaptive swim is geared toward expanding the worlds

One of the most common mistakes people make is that they define talent and skill synonymously. However, they are two completely different things. Talent you have naturally, you don’t have to work at it. Skill is ability developed from hours and hours of practice at your craft. My best talent is by far my ability to succeed in school, and my natural affinity for STEM topics.…

Ever since I was in the seventh grade, I have wanted to lose weight pretty badly. When in eighth grade I did not take a lot of action to achieve this. I was encouraged by family and friends to join the swim team. At first I was hesitant because I had not played a sport in eight years. I did not believe I was athletically capable of keeping up with the Canton Swim and Dive team.…

Everyone in at some point in their life will experience an event that will change their life forever; ranging from either a physical or mental change, to one that challenges someone’s beliefs and viewpoints on the world. For me, I experienced all three of these changes during my time on the First Flight High School Swim Team. By being a part of the team, I was able to break away from a former negative aspect on life and realize the potential and knowledge one can gather from those around them. In order to discuss the changes I experienced with the team, we must first break down how and where it all began. After moving around for the majority of the early years of my life, my family would settle down in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina shortly after my father’s retirement from the U.S Coast Guard.…

“Put some meaning into your words,” said my chorus teacher as apathetic faces and idle mouths stare back at him“ A folk song of this magnitude should not be sung with such a light heart”. My ears tune into the dissonant voices surrounding me slowing interpreting the lack of passion already evident to my teacher. Subconsciously, my eyes and head slowly move downwards trying to shield themselves from the wave of indifference flooding my class. As I open my eyes, I am met with the gaze of the words boldly printed on my sheet of music - Wade in the Water. My thoughts are delayed as the urgent words capture my attention only to be interrupted by a piece of my reality.…

Throughout the majority of my life, I was self-conscious and constantly worried about how I was perceived by others. As a child, I had always felt slightly out of place among my peers. I was just a little too quirky to fit into any of the groups at my school and I was too shy to force my way into one. I could not exactly understand what made me so different from my classmates and I desired more than anything to gain the self-confidence to express myself.…

Since December, I have been working hard on running an outdoor education trip called Advanced Survival. Through POST, the outdoor education program at my high school, last weekend I successfully led a group of 40 students on a multi-day backpacking trip teaching about survival skills and appreciation of nature. This trip took countless hours of planning and preparation but was well worth it as everyone had an excellent time, even those who had never backpacked previously. In addition, I have been preparing for the district Mock Trial competition that takes place this Saturday.…

The bow of the well-sized tow boat sliced into the motionless Lake Shasta water like scissors trimming a piece of paper. A distinct hum of the motor vibrated the floor as the boat hit occasional patches of water as rough as turbulence in an airplane. “Tell me you guys are ready!” my friend’s dad announced clear enough to be heard over the motor. My friend and I immediately exchanged glances as to determine who would attempt wakeboarding first.…

Learning something new can be a scary experience. One of the hardest things I have ever had to do was learn how to swim. I was afraid of the water, but my father and aunt decided that swimming was an important skill that I should learn. They also thought it would be good exercise and help me to become physically stronger. What I did not realize was that learning to swim would also make me a more confident person.…
